Parliament and Berkeley streets. Mr. Russell remained in office until Governor
Hon. Peter Hunter arrived in August, 1799. Parliament was again convened on June 2, 1800.
Major Holland’s duties as Surveyor—General in Upper Canada ceased when the Province was set apart in 1791, but he continued as Surveyor-General in the Province of Lower Canada until his death, and John Collins remained with him as his deputy until his death in April, 1795. The initial surveying work
in Upper Canada was done under the direction and general supervision of Major Holland.
On March 18, 1792, Holland and Collins wrote Governor Simcoe respecting surveys required between Lake Waghquata and the River Tranche, recom- mending that W’illiam Chewett should be employed. On October 14, 1792, from Detroit, R. England, Lieutenant—Colonel, 24th Regiment, writes Lieutenant Smith, the first Surveyor—General in Upper Canada, stating that Patrick McNiff had not been in pay as a deputy surveyor since April, 1789, and on November 4th writes again that McNiff is confined to his house and he believes to his bed.
Before leaving Quebec for Upper Canada, Governor Simcoe requested Surveyor-General Holland to furnish him with the names of the deputy surveyors, which was furnished the day before leaving. The list is as follows :—

Kingston, 8th November, 1792. DEAR SIR:—
On my arrival here I was informed of the arrival of Lt. Henry Holland of the 44th Regt. who brings advice of Mr. John Holland being appointed Surveyor-General, but whether he has received his Commission nobody has been able to determine.
Having some private matters to settle with Mr. Forsyth, I was obliged to delay my departure until the next Brigade of Batteaux.
Pray present my most unfeigned respect to your and the Major's family and believe me to be with the greatest respect
Your Most Obedt. Hbe. Scrt.
