75 entered the service in 1776 when thirteen years of age. This is one of several inexplicable records that cannot now be reconciled with facts. It is certain that Captain Samuel Holland did not reside on Isle St . Jean until 1764, although he may have visited it in 1758-1759 before the fall of Quebec . It is not probable that he was there again in 1762 when on his way to England . John Frederick studied surveying with his father and his name appears frequently in his father's reports. Major Holland states, in a letter to General Tryon , dated August, 1784, that he had left his son Jack at as acting Engineer, and that his second son Henry was with Collins assisting in surveys on the Bay of Quinte. John Frederick was appointed Barrack Master at Charlottetown in 1799 and attained the rank of Colonel . He was superannuated in 1817, and by one report he returned to Quebec where he died December 17, 1845. This cannot be reconciled with the fact that his will was dated at Charlottetown on December 16, 1845, the day before his death. Possibly an error has been made in transcrib¬ ing one of the dates. Another descendant states positively that he died at Charlottetown and was buried there. Mrs. Grace Pethick , wife of Dr. W. H. Pethick , and a granddaughter of Frederick Braham Holland, states that John Frederick joined the Masonic Order on July 10th, 1810, and severed his connection with his lodge on August 1st, 1827. On April 9th, 1833, he was succeeded as Adjutant-General of Militia by Major Ambrose Lane . Colonel John Frederick had six children: Edward, Robert, Samuel (III), who was killed at the Battle of Chrysler's Farm in Dundas County, Ontario , in 1813; Emily, who married Rev. Marshall ; Matilda, who married Captain Duport ; and Henrietta, who married Captain Robert Barker of H.M . 74th Regiment . Robert Barker , son of Captain Barker , married Hettie Welsh , sister of James E. Welsh , now of Boston, who were married in 1873. The Cathedral records at Quebec contain this entry: "Bap.— Samuel John Holland , son of John Holland , Esq., and of Marione, his wife, September 12, 1790." This was probably Samuel III. If John Frederick died at Quebec he was probably buried in the family burial plot with his father and his two brothers, Samuel L . and Frederick Braham , and beside two other children of Major Holland , as "five slumberers" are mentioned by Le Moine in his article on the " Holland Tree ." Henrietta, relict of Captain Robert Barker of the 74th Regiment , died July 28th, 1845, aged 48 years. Robert Barker , Jr., grandson of Colonel John Frederick , died October 22nd, 1861, aged 38 years. He was married 11th March, 1853. His two sons, Edward and Robert, died when young men and were not married. In the Roman Catholic cemetery at St. Andrews , about forty miles from Charlottetown , are two Holland tombstones, one to the memory of Mary
