He was a millwright and is said to have built the first wind¬ mill on the island, utilizing it to grinu grain. Todd plan, 1871 Lease 1834 to John McMillan from Andrew Thornton Todd has Barbary Weed hence a suggestion that the name was originally Barberry Weed ^ (barberry-commonishrub with red berries) but in a letter dated St. Eleanors , March 30, 1906 from Mr H <^ompto£ grandson of Hon'ble Harry Compton , who came to the island m 1804 it is stated that the river commemorates the wife of George Waite who settled near it, 1804.
