After Colonel Sir Frederick Haldimand (1719-91), governor general of Canada (1778-86), an original officer of the Royal American regiment, which was also Holland's; or after his nephew, surveyor-general Holland's assistant, who was drowned, while sounding, at , December 16, 1765, in his 24th year. Holland speaks of him as being a most accomplished mathematician and that he had "not only lost a friend" but "his principal assistant in astronomy, in which he had made surprising pro¬ gress."
