In a report Holland states that "the sea betwixt the island and the continent is frequently of a red hue.....by many people called the ." Red; point, lot 13. Chart , 1850. From a house built by land agent Abell (refer to Abell ) on a tract of 500 acres of land of which he had become the lessee at a yearly rental of four pence an acre, about one-third of the usual rent. The house was painted red and was for a time occupied by Mr. Heal , one of the first coroners for the island and who, during his residence there, condemned a man who had taken his own life to be buried at the cross roads immediately in front of the Red house, with a stake driven through his body; where he still lies without a sign of even the stake to mark the spot. Rice; point, lot 65, and cove, lot 29. Holland, 1765. After Rt. Hon. George Rice (1724-1779), lord commissioner of Trade and Plantations 1761-70. Meacham atlas calls the point St. Peters . Rice cove is a chart name. The Indian name of Rice point is Segunakadech, meaning "little ground-nut place." George Rice was the son of Edward Rice of Newton, Carmarthenshire, M.P. for that county in 1722. He matriculated at Christ church, Oxford , on January 26, 1742, at the age of 17, but took no degree and devoted himself to politics and local affairs. At the general election of 1754 he was returned, after a contest, for the county of Carmarthen and retained his seat 25 years, until his death, being re-elected four times without opposition. He was Lord Lieutenant of Carmarthen 1755 and reappointed 1761. He was first colonel of Carmarthen militia 1759. He was also Mayor of Carmarthen 1767. He married Cecil, daughter of William, 1st Earl Talbot , Lord Steward of the Royal household. On March 21, 1761, he accepted office under the Duke of Newcastle as a lord commissioner of the Board of Trade and Foreign Plantations, holding the post until April, 1770, when he was appointed treasurer of the King's chamber and a member of the Privy Council. Thos. Conolly; Georgina Carolina married the first Lord Holland , and Lady Sarah married in 1762 Sir Thomas Charles Bunbury , Bart., and secondly Hon. George Napier , by whom she was mother of the hero of Scinde and the historian of the Peninsular war. George III was a suitor for her hand. Unfortun¬ ately she broke her leg, and while she was laid up George was persuaded to change his mind and marry Princess Charlotte , a daughter of the Duke of Mecklenburg Strelitz and the marriage took place 1761. Lady Sarah was one of the bridesmaids. Her white satin dress is still preserved at Welbury.
