HON. THOMAS HEATH HAVILAND, Q. 0.,
MAYOR OF THE CITY OF CHARLOTTETOWN,
HON. THOMAS HEATH IIAVILAND, son of the late Hon, Thomas Heath Haviland, formerly of Gloucester, England. who for many years before the introduction of responsible Government in this Island, (1831) was a member of the Executive and Legislative Councils, and Colonial Secretary of P. E. Island. Born at Charlottetown, 13th November, 1822. Educated at Brussels, in Belgium. Married in 1847. Ann Elizabeth, daughter of John Grubbc, Esq, late of Horsendon Home. Bucks. England. Called to the bar of Prince Edward Island in 18-11%, and was created a QC. in 1865, also a master in Chancery; a Notary Public, and a Colonel in the volunteer militia. Was a member of the Executive Council of Prince Edward Island, from April 1859, until November 1862 ; for a short period in 1865: from 1866 to 1867, and from September 1870 until April 1872. During“ which several periods he held the office of 70lonial Secretary almost constantly, except in 1865, when he was Solicitor General, He was Speaker of the Provincial Assembly in 1863 to 1864:, and leader of the Opposition in that Chamber from 1867 until the general election in 1870- Entered the local cabinet again 18th April, 1873, and held the office of Provincial Secretary, which he resigned in 18/ 6- Was adelegate to the Quebec Union Confernce, 1864:, and to Ottawa with Hon. Messrs. Pope and Howlan, May, 1873. to arrange final terms upon which the Island was admitted as a. Province of the Dominion. He was a representative for Georgetown in the Provincial Assembly from 1846 until he resigned, 1874c ; during which he introduced and was with others instrumental in passing many measures beneficial to the Province. He was called to the Senate of the Dominion in October, 1873, and was Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island from 19th July, 1879, to the 31st July, 1854' Elected Mayor of the City of Charlottetown 1886, re-elected in‘1887 and 1888, and again in 1889, a position he now holdsl and fulfills the duties in this as well as the other responsible positions he has held, with the dignity of a gentleman, and the ability of a. statesman.
