Towards the end of the year 1886, the late Revd. W. R. Frame and the late Joseph W. Mitchell, both of whom had been engaged on the Protestant Union newspaper for some time, the former as its editor, started the Island Guardian Publishing Company, and purchased the plant and subscription list of the Protestant Union. The efforts of the promoters of the Island Guardian have been so successful that it is now looked upon with much favor, by an increasing number of patrons as a thoroughly indepen- dent and trustworthy journal.

The first number was issued on the 15th January, 1887. Eight pages originally, it has been subsequently altered to four pages of double size

The platfmm laid down by its late editor the Rev. W. R. Frame, and still adhered to is strictly as follows:

1. To maintain the principles of the Reformation.

2. To supply its readers from week to week with the news of the several Evangelical Churches and give a correct summary of leading eventsiat home and abroad.

3. To have no hand in partizau politics and thus be in a position to command the right and expose the wrong.

4-. Prohibition of the Liquor traffic and to aid in carry- ing out the “Canada Temperance Act.”
