connected with the business it has continued to grow with the growth of the town, their interests being identical, until to-day it is more strongly entrenched than ever in the respect and esteem of its patrons, and never was it in a more advantageous position to do battle for the people’s rights. While it has seen many of its contemporaries falter and fall by the wayside, the Journal has kept steadily on, triumphing over every obstacle, until it attained its present proud position, and its prospects were never brighter than they are at the present time. It may truly be said that the history of Summerside, for almost a quarter of a century past, and the history of the Journal, are one and the same, for they have grown together during those years of solid progress, and a brighter future yet is in store for both.
In 1882, the‘ Prince Edward Island Agriculturz'st, a paper devoted exclusively to the interests of the farmers, and especially the stock breeders, of the Province, was started in connection with the Journal. At first it was a small four paged paper, issued fortnightly. and mailed with the Journal. In 1884, it was first issued weekly, but still mailed in the same way. In 1887, it was enlarged to an eight paged, forty column paper, a local news department added, and the papers issued and mailed on separate days of the week—the Journal on Thursday, which has always been its day of publication, and the Agriculturz'sl on Monday.
The phenomenal success of the Journal and Agriculturz'st has never been equaled by any other Island paper, which is a proof of their great popularity. It is Worthy of remark that while every other paper in the Province is owned and controlled by a joint stock company, the Journal and Agriculturz'st are entirely the result of one individual’s
enterprise, and therefore all the more entitled to a generous support
The Journal 1s provincial and local 1n its scope. Believe ing this to be the banner province of the Dominion, our aim is to promote every movement and every interest calculated to benefit the Province in general, and Summer- side' 1n particular.
