have survived from the French period of settlement (1719-1759), although 10 of these have survived in translation. Among the latter are , Canoe Cove , , St. Peters Bay , St. Peters Island , (?) and Wood Islands . Other French names that have survived include Bay Fortune , Fortune River , Cape Traverse , , Belle River , , DeGros Marsh , Point Deroche , DeSable River , Fortune Cove , Gallas Point (?), Gaspereaux , Grande Digue Point , Grand River , Jacques River , Marie River , Morell River , Naufrage River , Pinette , River Platte , Point Prim , , Savage Harbour and Souris River . It may have been the French influence that promoted so many minor water¬ courses and tidal estuaries to the generic term "river". Certainly the term receives common usage for numerous short streams that elsewhere in the Maritimes would be called "creeks". The French term "barachois" is used in three areas of the Island to describe ponds enclosed by bars at sea level. Distinguished British Persons Samuel Holland is responsible for most of the names derived from dis¬ tinguished British persons. He personally named 191 features for prominent military and political figures. Of these, 92 names that Holland gave remain in official use; several of these, however, are little known locally and may be dropped or replaced in the future. The following table identifies the Holland names retained.
