It is used for a brook, two creeks, two rivers, two ponds, a lake, two marshes and four points. “Red” is a dominant landscape colour in the Island, but it occurs only in the names of two heads and six points. “Green” occurs as the specific part of the name Green Point near Alberton, and is a component in such names as Greenfield, Greenvale (twice) and Green Meadows. Graystone Creek is also a colour name.
Derived from Physical Characteristics
Relatively few names in Prince Edward Island are directly related to the physical characteristics for which they are named. Features so named are: Crooked River, Crown Point, Flat River (possibly a translation from the French), High Bank, Hollow River, Horse Head, Muddy Creek, Narrows Creek, Rocky Point, Tea Hill and White Sands.

There are several names in which cardinal points are used. Among these are East Point, North Cape, North Point, North River, South Lake, Southwest River, West Point, West Royalty, East Royalty, West River, West Devon, South Granville, North Tryon, West Covehead, North Rustico, and Pisquid West. Middleton, Central Lot 16 and Southwest Lot 16 may also be noted here. Relative size occurs in such names as Big Point, Little River, Long Creek (twice) and Long River. Distances appear in Nine Mile Creek, Sevenmile Bay and Tenmile House. “Lower” occurs in seven different names: Lower Bedeque, Lower Freetown, Lower Hamilton, Lower Malpeque, Lower Montague, Lower Rollo Bay and Lower Tryon. On the other hand “upper” occurs only in Upper MacLures Pond and Upper Simpsons Pond, and its only use for a populated place, Upper Westmorelana’, is now an obsolete designation. The term “rear” at one time was used in various names, but these were considered derogatory, and were replaced: Orwell Rear became Lyndale; Argyle Rear became New Argyle; and Morell Rear became Green Meadows. The place called 48 Road is on the road leading from Cardigan to Lot 48. Fifteen Point is at Mount Carmel in Lot 15.
Flora
At least 25 names relate to the occurrence of vegetation. Among these are Beech Point, Birch Hill (Lot 49), Blooming Point, Cherry Valley, Elmsdale, Elm- wood, Hay River, Hazelgrove, Maple Hill, Maple Plains, Maplewood, Poplar Grove, Poplar Point, Rose/till, Roseville and Rose Valley. Included here is Poverty Beach, possibly so named for its lack of vegetation.
Fauna
A variety of terrestrial and sea life has given Prince Edward Island at least 31 names. Trout River occurs four times, and Goose River, Lobster Point, Ram Island and Seal River twice each.
