Searrout Point, Sheep River and Smelt River. The following names derived from the French period of occupation may also be noted here: Cape Bear, Gaspereaux, Sturgeon Bay, Sturgeon River, Skinners Pond (?) and Souris River (7).
Shift Names
Shift names are those derived from the names of other features nearby. Several names have originated from other names, with the original ones becoming obsolete. The village of Crapaud is named for the local river called by the French riviere aux Crapauds, but this has long been locally called Westmoreland River. Harrington, Albion and Bedford Station recall the names given to bays by Samuel Holland in 1765. Other shift names derived from names given by Holland include Conway, Granville, St. Georges, St. Patrick Road and York Point. Additional shift names are Clyde, Green Park, Marshfield and Miscouclie.
Incident Names
An incident name relates to a specific event having taken place at the scene. Such names occurring in Prince Edward Island include Cable Head, Bear River, Burnt Point (twice), Devils Punchbowl Park, Five Houses, Glencorradale, Poxy Island, Naufrage and Shipwreck Point. Names like Salutation Cove and Surveyor Point suggest incidents during Samuel Holland’s survey. Some other names like Freeland, Freetown, Harmony, New Harmony, Launching Place, Oar River and Schooner Creek appear to be related to local events.
Manufactured Names
Names specifically created in Prince Edward Island are designated manufac- tured names. Clear examples are Alberry Plains, Bothwell, Bayside, Bayview, Bellevue, Bel/evue Point, Brookfield, Brookvale, Fairview, Fernwood, Forest Hill, Forestview, Giants Armchair, Grandview, Green Meadows, Lake Verde, Lakeville, Meadow Bank, Milburn (twice), Norway, Pleasant Grove, Pleasant Valley, Pleasant View, Riverton, Sea View, Springton, Springvale, Spring Valley, Summerside, Unionvale, Waterside, Watervale, Woodvale and Woodville Mills. Some of these might be classified as descriptive names. There are a large number of names that may commemorate places outside Prince Edward Island, but because no evidence is available, they are grouped here. Among these are: Fairfield, Farmington, Glenwood, Greenfield, Greenmount, Hartsville, Hazelbrook, Heatherdale, Highfield, Hopedale Road, Mayfield, Millcove, Newtown, Newton Cross, Parkdale, Riverdale, Springbrook, Spring/till, Summerville, Upton, Valleyfield, Windon and Woodbrook.
Mistake Names
Phelan Point would appear to be the only Clear example of a mistake name in that it was originally called Wellings Point, and was later rendered on maps by the present official name. Cove Head and Cross River were mistake names on recent topographical maps, but their utilization on maps did not correspond to local usage and they have been rescinded by the Permanent Committee. The application of Goose River to McAskill River was also an error, but these names have been restored to the proper features.
