Beaton Road: 6 mi SE of O’Leary in Lot 9. PO 1909-1923. Douglas 1925 notes for John Beaton son of Donald Beaton of Lot 47; however, John Beaton settled 4 mi N at present Carleton. Probably named for Allan, Jos. and Venus Beaton, residents at the mouth of Beatons Creek as shown

on Meacham 1880.

Beatons Creek: Flows SE into Percival Bay, Lot 10. Meacham 1880 has Allan, Jos. and Venus Beaton at the mouth. Formerly called Maxime Creek.

Beatons Creek: Flows W into Tracadie Bay, Lot 36. Meacham 1880 shows Donald Beaton there, and Cummins 1925 names John Beaton beside it.

Beatons Mills: PO 1875—1 966 in Melville, Lot 60. Angus Beaton came from Scotland 1803. His son builtthe mills 1863.

Bealons Mills: Former settlement on Cardigan River, 2 mi W of Cardigan in Lot 52. In Meacham 1880 with Kenneth and Donald Beaton shown as residents.

Beatons River: Flows E into Trout River in Lot 6. Named for John Beaton. settler,

miller and postmaster at Carleton there in late 1800s.

Beaver Point: Extends into Gulf of St. Law- rence, Lot 42. On Holland 1765.

Bedeque: 5 mi SE of Summerside in Lot 26. PO from 1827. Noted in JHA 1806. Meacham 1880 has Centreville with Bede—

que PO. Formerly called Hooper’s Corner.

Bedeque Bay: Adjacent to Northumberland Strait, SW of Summerside, Possibly derived from Micmac Pete/cook “the place that lies

on the backward turn” (W. F. Ganong); Douglas 1925 and Leard 1948 have from Eptek, “the hot place”; other doubtful origins are “sunny camping place” and “hunting grounds”. Bellin 1744 Bedec; De la Roque 1752 Bedecque; Holland 1765 Halifax Bay, By the French Bay of Bedeck.

Bedford: In Meacham 1880 for a school dis- trict in Blooming Point.

Bedford Bay: See Tracadie Bay.

Bedford Paris/1: Named by Holland 1765 for Lots 35, 36, 37, 48 and 49 in Queens County. Rarely used and no longer re- ferred to.

Bedford Station: 8 mi NE of Charlottetown. Probably derived from Bedford Bay, the name given by Holland to Tracadie Bay, and from Bedford Parish. PO 1904-1969. School area 01864. Bedford Comer is 3%: mi S at the junction of Highways 2 and 6.

Beech Hill: Douglas 1925 notes for a hill and settlement in Lot 49, but its only use would appear to be for a road in Alberry Plains that follows the lot boundary (49 and 50) t0 the county line. On Ells 1884 and Milford 1920.

Beech Point: Extends into Malpeque Bay in Hamilton, Lot 18. Named for a grove of

bcech trees. On Bayficld 1850. In Micmac Ku'esomalegek, “hardwood point”.

Belfast: District 13 mi SW of Montague em- bracing Eldon, Newtown Cross, Iona, Surrey, Pinette, Roseberry and Flat River. Named by Capt. James Smith of HMS MERMAID cl 770 for Belfast, Ireland (Gentleman’s Magazine, March 1771); not from French belle face or for a “bell” found “fast” in a swamp. Possibly it was Lord Selkirk’s note in his diary of August 13,
