1803: “the settlement at the old French village called Belfast” — that mislead people to believe that the name was French. Settlement was attempted in 1775 and 1785 but was not successful until Lord Selkirk’s arrival in 1803. In Micmac Megwasa, “red bank”. PO from 1832. Meacham 1880 shows Belfast school on W side of Eldon. Holland 1765 places Prim Village here. The modern Belfast school is between Pinette and Flat River. The centre of Belfast is considered to be St. John’s Presbyterian Church 1 mi S of Eldon. This site Meacham 1880 names Pinette Mills. Belfast Cove and Belfast Point were former names in the area that are no longer used.

Belle River: 11 mi W of Murray River in Lot 62. The school area was Belle Creek until 1900. PO Belle Creek 1867-1967; PO Belle River from 1967.

Bellevue: 7 mi SW of Montague in Lots 57 and 58. Probably named for good views obtained from the hills in the area. PO Murray Harbour Road 1856—1906; PO Bellei‘ue 1906—1913.
Bellevue: Douglas 1925 has for a school dis- trict in Lot 12; not in Meacham I880.
Bellevuc Point: Extends into Hillsborough Bay, SW of Tea Hill. Named by William Haszard, Loyalist, first settler there, who found a beautiful view. Bellevue Cove is an adjacent water feature.
Bell Point: Extends into Northumberland Strait at Belle River, Lot 62. Settled by Bells from Scotland, one of whom, Angus Bell, was married there in 1813. Holland 1765 Bacons Point; Lake 1863 Bell Point;

unnamed in Meacham 1880 but Neil, Mal- colm, Lauchlan and Archibald Bell are shown as residents there; Cummins 1925 has Ang. M., Neil and Malcolm Bell.
Bells Point: Extends into Northumberland Strait in Cape Traverse, Lot 28. Formerly it was identified on Charts and maps as Cape Traverse until the latter was changed in 1966 to agree with usage. Holland 1765 and Meacham 1880 Cape Traverse. In Micmac Baslooakade, “seacow haunt” (Rand) or Elmamgetig, “extending on the other side” (Pacifique). Meacham 1880 shows Geo. Bell resident there and Cum~ mins 1925 has Jno. Bell there.
Bells Pond: In Lot 35, S of Tracadie Bay. On Lake 1863 and in Douglas 1925 but not on NTS maps. Meacham 1880 has Thomas Bell living beside it, but does not name it. Identified in Cummins 1925.
Belmont Lot 16: 6 mi NW of Summerside in Lot 16. Named for Belmont, Colchester County, NS. School area Belmont c1877. PO Belmont 1888-1913.
