longer referred to.

Holland as one of the 70 territorial divi- sions of PEI.

Charlottetown Harbour: Franquet 1751 Fort Lajoie; de la Roque 1752 Port la Joye; Holland 1765 Port 10y. In Micmac Book- sak, “narrow passage between cliffs.”

Chamwood: PO 1894-1914 in Souris Line Road, Lot 45. Possibly named for Charn- wood Forest, Leicester, England.

" Chelton: 4 mi NW of Borden in Lots 26 and 27. Possibly a corruption of Cheltenham. PO South Shore, Bedeque 1873—c1880; PO Chelton1895~1924.

Chepstow: 2 mi E of Souris in Lot 45. Named by a settler from Chepstow, Monmouth, Wales. Noted in JHA 1845. PO 1878- 1913. Chepstow Point is an adjacent fea- ture. Meacham 1880 notes Chepstow, Chepstow Point and as well, Chepstow Cove.

Cherry Grove: PO 1871-1913 in Souris Line Road, Lot 45. School district was Gran- ville. Both are noted in Meacham 1880.

Cherry Hill: 3 mi E of Mount Stewart in Lot 38. Named for the abundance of cherry trees on a hill. School district (21878. PO 1902-1912.

Cherry Island: See Oultons Island.

Cherry Valley: 11 mi SE of Charlottetown in Lots 49 and 50. PO 1860-1967. Named for the estate of Joseph Beers, which he estab— lished in 1785 after having served with a garrison at Charlottetown for two years.

According to Macqueen (1957, p. 81) it was named by James Lewis Hayden for Cherry Valley near Otsego, New York. The grandson of Mr. Beers believed that there also was a place of the same name in Devonshire, England. Known to the French as Marguerite.

Cheverie Creek: Douglas 1925 has this for a small creek flowing SW into Souris River on N side of Souris. Meacham 1880 has Chivirie Cr.

Chichester Cove: On SE side of Malpeque Bay. Named by Samuel Holland 1765, probably for Chichester, England near which is the Richmond seat of Goodwood. In Micmac Kadagakun (Rand), or Gatega- geneg (Pacifique 1934), “eel trap”.

Chichester Point: See Mills Point.

China Point: 13 mi SE of Charlottetown in Lot 50. PO 1885-1914.

China Point: Extends into Orwell Bay, Lot 50. Possibly named for a French settler. De la Roque 1752 noted that Jean Chesnay (Chainay) was at Savage Harbour for 25 years. W. S. N. Crane reported in 1924

.my father [said] the place was called after a man named Chaney, whom he had heard tell of as the builder of a vessel near that place. Amongst the old people china tableware was called “Chaney” and when that word came to be pronounced properly a change also took place in pronouncing the name of the settlement. I remember hearing both pronunciations. The man referred to must have been an old French settler”. According to Douglas 1925 an undated map, but before 1790, locates a family by the name of China south of the Village of Vernon River. JHA 1806 Chiney- Point. In Micmac Abadomkeak, “sandy shore winding and turning”. China Creek is beside the point.
