Dennis Point: Extends into Bideford River, Lot 13. Three generations of families with this name have lived there. Formerly called Penman Point. George Penman is noted in Census of 1798. Also formerly known as Yeos Point.
Derby: 5 mi SE of O’Leary in Lot 9. Selected at a public meeting March 20, 1869 to replace Brae East as a school name. Named for Edward George Geoffrey Smith Stanley (1799—1869), 14th Earl of Derby, 21 Prime Minister of England.
Deroche, Point: Extends into Gulf of St. Law- rence, Lot 37. Possibly derived from an Acadian family name; Etienne Charles Philippe dit LaRoche was settled near it in 1752; the Census of 1798 shows Joseph Deroehe in Lot 19; DesRoche and Des- Roches are current family names in that lot. Devils Punchbowl Park: In Lot 21 adjacent to Granville Creek. Named after a depres— sion where in the 1800s John Hawkins tem- porarily lost a puncheon of rum. Tradition has it that a man nearby had to help Hawkins himself out of the hole, and was rewarded with a gallon of rum. Wright and Cundall 1874 Punchbowl Pond. Recent usage has also been Devils Punch Pole.
Dewars Point: Extends into Montague River, 2 mi E of Montague. Meacham 1880 notes Daniel Dewar there, and Cummins 1925 has Robt. Dewar.
Dewars Pond: On Brudenell River, Lot 52. Meacham 1880 shows saw, fulling and grist mills there with Abner Dewar on an adjacent property. Cummins 1925 iden- tifies Wm. and A. Dewar there.
Dickiesons Point: Extends into West River at New Dominion, Lot 65. Possibly named for Andrew Diekieson who lived there in 1898. Chart 1846 and Douglas 1925 McMullan Point. Neither Meacham 1880 nor Cum- mins 1925 show either personal name in the area, although Douglas 1925 notes that McMullan is a local family name.
Diligent Pond: In Lot 47, 1 mi W of East Point. Probably named for the brig DILIGENT, which was stationed at Charlot— tetown in 1776. On Plan 1808.
Dingwell: Station 2 mi E of Morell, Lot 40. James Dingwell came from Dumfries, Scot- land in the late 1700s and settled at St. Peters. Several with the name are listed in Meacham 1880 and in the current tele— phone directory.
Dingwells Mills: 10 mi W of Souris in Lot 56. For William Dingwell who had grist and saw mills there as early as 1838; Joseph Dingwell had mills there in 1864. William Dingwell was listed in Lot 56 in the Census of 1798. School district in 1880 was Mansfield.
