Hillsborough Parish: Named by Samuel Hol- land 1765 for Lots 29, 30, 3'1 and 65 for Wills Hill (1718-1793) Earl of Hills— borough. Rarely used and no longer re- ferred to.
Hillsborough River: Flows SW into Char— lottetown Harbour. Named by Samuel Holland 1765 for Wills Hill (1718-1793) Earl of Hillsborough, Lord Commissioner
of Trade and Plantations. Franquet 1751 riviére du Nord-Est; PEI Directory 1864 and commonly now East River. The name Hillsborough Bridge probably helps to maintain the official name in the Charlotte— town area. Plan 1819 has Hillsborough River, with The North River and The West River for the other two. In Micmac Elset— kook, “flowing close by high rocks”. Paci- fique 1934 also notes Elsetgog and states the Indians also call it Plansoe ijorjitj, “Frank’s brook,” for some uncommon man. Douglas 1925 has Mimtugaak, “run- ning straight up”, but this, or Nemtagag, belongs to NorthRiver.
Hillsborough Town: On Map 1775 in the area of the present Harrington, Lot 33. Named
by Thomas DesBrisay, probably for the Earl of Hillsborough.
