Portage Lake: In Lot 10, 1 mi NW of Portage. The only natural body of water in Prince C0. Said to be bottomless. In Micmac Meskekumpudas, “deep pond”.
Portage River: Flows N into Trout River, Lot 10, at one of the narrowest points between gulf and strait waters (2.2 mi). Derived from French through Micmac oonigun, “portage”. Maps 1762 and 1764 Commu- nication River.
Port Borden: PO from 1918 at Borden.
Port Hill: 21/2 mi E of Tyne Valley in Lot 13. Named by early settlers for Porthill, a resi— dence near Bideford, Devonshire, England. PO 1832—1969. In Micmac Mogulawijik “brant place” (Douglas 1925), but Paci- fique 1934 places this at Gillis Point.
Port La Joie: Site of largest French settlement near Rocky Point, S of Charlottetown in
early 17005. In 1721, 100 people were living there.
Portland: School district in late 18005 on Mclnnis Road, Lot 50, 2 mi SW of China Point.
Portree Creek: See Newtown River.
Port Selkirk: Former name at Brush Wharf in Lot 57, 1 mi W of Orwell Cove. Named for Thomas Douglas (1771—1820) 5th Earl of Selkirk.
Port Wood: PO 1908-1915 in the E part of Wood Islands, Lot 62. Formerly called Woodville.
Poudre Point: See Hardy Point.
Poverty Beach: Sandbar between Murray Harbour and Northumberland Strait. Prob- ably named because it had no vegetation. Named by the French Poime aa Sable. Hol— land 1765 Sable Point, but it is not known locally, although on NTS 11 L/1 1966.
Pownal: 8 mi E of Charlottetown in Lot 49. PO Lot 49 01854-1871; PO Powna111871- 1940; PO Pownal from 1940.
Pownal Bay: Adjacent to Hillsborough Bay, Lots 49 and 50. Named by Samuel Holland 1765 for John Pownall, Secretary of the Board of Trade and Plantations 1758- 1761, and later Secretary of State. DesBarres 1779 Pownal Bay; Bayfield 1846 Pownell Bay. In Micmac Ntuagwo-
kun, “good sealing place”. Called by the French Le Marais.
Pownalls Village: On Map 1775 in the area of Meadow Bank, Lot 31. Named by Thomas DesBrisay, probably for John Pownall, Secretary of the Board of Trade and Plantations.
Poxy Island: In Georgetown Harbour, Geor- getown Royalty. The outer part was once an island, and on it smallpox victims were isolated. Plan 1745 I. Dangers; Holland 1765 Gooseneck; Cundall 1851 Thram Cape; Meacham 1880 Thrum Cap. Plan 1745 has Barac/zois de Rossignol behind the point.
Prevost Cove: Adjacent to Northumberland Strait, 4 mi SE of Borden, Lot 28. Named by Samuel Holland 1765 for Major Gen- eral Augustin Prevost (1723-1786) who fought with Wolfe at Quebec. The point on the E side of the cove was formerly named Prcvost Point.
Priest Pond: 9 mi NE of Souris in Lot 46. PO 1881-1892; the P0 was moved 1 mi W to Bayfield in 1892.
