Named by Samuel Holland 1765 Elliot River for Edward Eliot (1727-1804) lst Baron Eliot, Lord Commissioner of Trade and Plantations 1760. Commonly written Elliott River. Both names competed for acceptance, but West River, being pre- dominantly used locally, was officially ap- proved 1970. In Micmac Tjigaoegatig, “bass place” (Pacifique 1934).
