Winter River: See Chapel Creek.

Winter River: Flows E into Tracadie Bay, Lot 35. Origin unknown. On Wright and Cundall 1874. Winter Bay, which appears in Meacham 1880 and on NTS 11 L/6 1967, is really the mouth of the river, and is unknown locally. Holland 1765 Oyster Cove, by the French River de Blang.

Wiseners Pond: In Lot 48 at Watervale. Named for James Wisener, a miller and farmer there in the 18005.

Wolfe, Cape: Extends into Northumberland Strait, Lot 7. Named by Samuel Holland 1765 for James Wolfe (1727-1759) who distinguished himself at Quebec, 1759. There is a tradition that Wolfe landed on a rock there on the way to Quebec, but Douglas 1925 says there is no basis for it. A. B. Warburton, who wrote a history of the island, could find no evidence of a landing.

Wolfe Inlet: Adjacent to Egmont Bay, Lot 8. Named by Samuel Holland 1765 for James Wolfe (1727-1759). In Micmac Mego— bungwechk. meaning unknown. Holland also named Wolfe Marshes beside the inlet.

Woodbrook: 9 mi E of O’Leary in Lot 1 1. On Lake 1863 and in Meacham 1880. PO 1908-1914.

Wood Islands: 7 mi SW of Murray River in Lot 62. PO 1855-1915 and from 1967; PO Wood Islands North 1889—1967; PO Wood Islands West 1905-1932. Lake 1863 Milford.

Wood Islands: In Northumberland Strait, Lot 62. Originally two islands, one 20 acres, the other 5 acres, but the construc- tion of harbour facilities since 1868 has greatly altered their shape. Bellin 1744 I a Bova; Franquet 1751 Isles a bois. In Micmac Menesg, “grassy”.

Wood Islands Harbour: At Wood Islands, Lot 62. In 1868 called Victoria Harbour, but the local name soon superseded it.

Woodridge: In Lovell’s Directory 1871 as site of Lot 8 PO, which is present Glen- wood. Meacham 1880 shows Woodridge Road there.

Woods Point: Extends into Alexandra Bay, Lot 49. William Wood settled in Lot 49 in 1792, and Theophilus, Thomas, Robert and James Wood were settlers there in 1841. Meacham 1880 shows the point owned by Jas., William and Howard Wood. Woods Cove is adjacent to the point.

Worths Pond: On Seal River, Lot 49. Named for Ernie Worth who has owned it since 01945. Formerly called Bradleys Pond.
