HON. ANDREW ARCHIBAED MACDONALD

Hon. Andrew Archibald MacDonald, was born at Brudenell Point, King's Co., P.E.I., February 14, 1829, eld- est son of Hugh MacDonald and Catherine MacDonald, natives of Invernesshire, Scotland. The grandfather of Hon. A. A. MacDonald was Andrew macDonald who about 1805 bought 10,000 acres in Prince Edward Island which included land around Three Rivers, Lot 22, and Panmure Island where he settled on beautifully wooded land at entrance of Georgetown Harbour.

Hon. Andrew A. received his education from such public schools as existed, and from private tutors. At age of fifteen he went into business in Georgetown with a cousin; on the death of the latter, the business was taken over by Mr. A. A. MacDonald, who took in his two brothers as part— ners. They engaged extensively in.developing the resources of the province by shipbuilding, prosecuting fisheries and exporting Island products, until in 1873, he removed to

sent Georgetown in the House of Assembly; in 1865 he was elected a member of the Legislative Council where he held a seat until 1875, when he was appointed Postmaster General of the Province. He held that position when the Island joined the Dominion Confederacy, and his official designation was thenceforward "Postmaster for Charlottetown and Supervisor of Postal Services for Prince Edward Island,"

In 1864, he was appointed one of the delegates to the Charlottetown convention which was held to consider form» ing a Maritime Union. There resulted the Historic Quebec Conference in October of the same year, where he was one of the delegates, and where the first terms of Confederation were formulated; these, with some modifications, are the basis of the Constitution of the Dominion of Canada.

In 1884, Hon. A. A. MacDonald, was appointed Lieut . Governor of the Province, and occupied that position until September 1889, Later, he was called to the Senate, My. Manonald took an active part in the Land Purchase Act, Railway legislation, and all measures which materially bene- fited his native province.

In 1863, Senator macDonald married Miss Elizabeth Owen a daughter of the late Thomas Owen, Sro, formerly Postmaster General of Prince Edward Island.
