=54- CORMWALL The first name of this settlement in the Atlas was Rye's Corner. The early French settlers of this area owned a saw and grist mill on the South side of the . The miller lived in a small house built of 6 inch plank about opposite Leigh Howard 's gate. In Campbell's census of 1798, there were eleven families in Lot 32, including William Crosby , William Hyde , William Dockendorff and Jacob Hartz . About 1819 English settlers came from Cornwall , England , namely* Kellows, May- hews, Eewsoms. The Newsom's first home was the French mil¬ ler's house. Another early settler, Eoah 7fibbey had a house in Mr. Richard Doak 's field. An old well marks the spot. This man kept a restaurant called Noah's Ark, where strong drink was a specialty» The first school in Cormwall was log built, and built opposite the present one on the other side of the road. Mr. Darrach of Clyde River was one of the first teachers. The discipline in those days would be considered severe today. Early teachers included.
