"About the middle of the voyage the ship came across a Scotch brig in.a sinking condition and took off 60 passengers and the crew; among the passengers were: Dr. McGregor who settled at St. Peter's Road‘ He was afterwards murdered in.the gold fields of British Columbia; Thomas Gor- vat, West River, Thomas Hodgson a local preacher, Robert MerriSOn, who settled in Sussex, NQBO; Robert Mitten and family, Coverdale, N;S. 0f the 196 passengersfirwho sailed

on the S S valiant Mr. Smith says that he and Thomas Fawcett of Salisbury, N;B. are the only survivors of which

he is aware. Mrs Fawcett is in his 84th year and Mr. Smith in his 85th.

The voyage lasted 73 days. Captain Izaard died on his next voyage and is buried in the Old Cemetery in Charlotte-2 town. The ship Valiant was a floating chapel in 1839.

Mro Smith will have the gratitude of hundreds of the descendants of the parties above mentioned, in thus making public an important event in the history of the Island and welding a link in the chain of circumstances Which connects the earlier day of the province with those of the present generations"
