THE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT
exists in Prince Edward Island as in the other Provinces
of the Dominion, a Local Legislature for the control of all matters of Provincial importance. This Government
is vested in the Lieutenant Governor appointed for 5 years by the Federal Administration, and whose salary is $7,000 per annum, an Executive Council of 9 members who have seats in the Legislature and who are responsible to the same, and a Legislative Assembly elected by the people. Premier,
Attorney General,
Provincial Secretary-Treasurer and Commissioner of Crown and Public Lands,
Commissioner of Public Works,
And Five Ministers without portfolio.
Prior to 1893, there were two branches of the Legislature. one called the Legislative Council, representing the property holders, and the other the House of Assembly. The Legislative Council consisted of 13 members elected from certain large constituencies. The House of Assembly consisted of 30 Mem- bers elected from smaller constituencies. The Legislative Councillors were elected by voters who owned freehold or leasehold property to the value of $325. The Members of the House of Assembly were elected practically by manhood
suffrage.
The present Legislative Assembly is the result of the amalgamation of these two Houses which took place in 1893. It consists of 30 Members—15 Councillors elected by one set
