These were the only polls then held in the county, the former could be kept open for three days and the latter for two days. In 1830 polls were held at Charlotte¬ town and Cambeltown, Lot 21, south side of Stanley river and at Pinette mill in Queens. Amongst early members for Queens were Doctor McAulay , William Hyde , Lemuel Cambridge and Ewen Cameron and for Paul Mabey, Robert Hodg ¬ son and Samuel Nelson , and at another time for Queens Ralph Brecken . William Hyde , William Dockendorff and George Birnie . In 1848 provision was made for elections to be held in one day to promote the purity of elections and the diminution of expenses. The members in 1855 for the first district of Queens were George Coles , Alexander Laird . — William Macgill and Robert Mooney . — William Douse and Donald Munro . —Francis Longworth and Edward Palmer . These Were the eight members who last represented the county previously to the in¬ creased representation. Coles is noted for the active interest he manifested in popular gov¬ ernment and national education and Palmer was our respected chief justice. The other gentlemen were active and useful in the pub¬ lic life of the colony for many years. At confederation two members were to be chosen by for the House of Commons of Canada . The first elected were Laird and Sinclair in 1873, both of whom still survive and are highly thought of. The county names after these in politics were Pope and Brecken, Davies and Welsh , Mackinnon, and for short periods Jen ¬ kins, Farquharson and Haszard, the pres¬ ent members being McLean and Martin. Hons. David Laird , James C. Pope and Sir Louis Davies became leading ministers in the Cabinet of Canada and Senator Ferguson held cabinet position and was second choice for leader of his party in the senate the pres¬ ent year. Davies was appointed to the Cana¬ dian supreme court bench. Senator McDon ¬ ald had been Lieutenant Governor and was one of the fathers of confederation. The senators residing in the county previously were Haythorne, Montgomery, Carvell, who was afterward Lieutenant Governor . Sir Robert Hodgson was the first native of the county to become Lieutenant Governor . Hav- iland and the present Lieutenant Governor were also natives of . Chief Justices Sir Robert Hodgson , Edward Pal ¬ mer and William Wilfred Sullivan were na¬ tives of Queens and successively filled the im¬ portant position since 1853 with eminent abilities. The Attorneys General have for about fifty years all been natives of Queens and amongst the speakers of the Assembly during this period were Donald Montgom-
