PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND. -'. V * had not that understanding of matters which permitted them to push the case of organiza¬ tion to successful issue. At this stage it hap¬ pened fortunately that Grand Trustee P. J. O'Keefe , of St. John, New Brunswick , who was attached to the Detective Branch of the Customs department for Maritime Canada , came to the Island. He had written previously with a view to establishment; now he inter¬ viewed the clergy personally and solicited the prominent members of the Catholic laity to enter the association. Still, it was uphill work, Finally, he interested Rev. Father Burke, of Alberton , and was invited to visit his parish and establish the pioneer Island branch. This was done on the evening of the 26th of Oc¬ tober, 1893, with the following charter mem¬ bers: Spiritual adviser, Rev. A. E. Burke ; president, Rev. A. E. Burke ; first vice-presi¬ dent, J. P. Brennan ; second vice-president, James P. Cunningham ; recording secretary, John A. Keefe ; assistant secretary, James H. Gavin ; financial, Pr. P. C. Murphy ; treasurer. John B. Cunningham ; marshal. Thomas Doyle ; guard, George B. Murphy ; trustees. Rev. A. K. Burke , J. P. Cunning- Aam, J. A. Keefe, Frank J. Cahill , J. P. Bren ¬ nan. The title and number of the new branch was Sacred Heart, No. 214. Father Burke was appointed District Deputy and proceeded with Grand Trustee O'Keefe to side, where Branch No. 215 was established, and thence to Charlottetown , the Capital, where the Cathedral Branch of St. Dunstan's was duly inaugurated on the 28th of the same month with a membership of twenty and the following charter members: Presi¬ dent, Joseph B. McDonald ; first vice-presi¬ dent, Stanislaus Blanchard ; second vice- president, Peter McCourt ; recording secre¬ tary, James M. Sullivan ; assistant recording secretary, Simon P. Paoli ; financial secre¬ tary, Alfred J. Quick ; treasurer, Aeneas A. McDonald ; marshal, Simon P. Grant ; guard, P. V. O'Reilly ; trustees, Rev. D. B. Reid , James Mclsaac , P. P. Gillis , William T. Payne , Dr. S. R. Jenkins . Thus a footing having been obtained in the province, the organization spread to all the parishes until today it is the most flour¬ ishing Catholic mutual benefit association within the diocese, and that to which the Bishop and clergy look for most salutary re¬ sults. We have quoted elsewhere the hearty words of approval which the present Bishop of the Diocese, Right Rev. J. C. McDonald , D. D ., has published abroad with regard to the Catholic Mutual Benefit Association. He has ever given it the encouragement and sup¬ port it deserves, and let it be said that the Association has ever been ready, also, to sec¬ ond him in all the good works undertaken in the interests of his spiritual children. When branches were planted by him in the other counties, Prince Edward Island was made a province in the association sense, and the Deputy l>ecameGrand Dep ¬ uty. Then the district or county deputies were: Kings County, J. J. Hughes, Esq.; , S. Blanchard , Esq.; , S. M. Bent , Esq. At the Ottawa convention all the district deputies were made grand deputies and those positions were held by the Rev. Fathers Burke and McMillan, in Prince and King- counties, and by Mr. James Mclsaac . in . The new grand deputies named at the Toronto convention in 1904, and still in office are: For , A. E. Arsenault , Esq., attorney-at- law : , Joseph McCarey , Esq., of the Postoffice Department: Kings County, Austin L. Fraser , M. L. A . attorney-at-law. On the same occasion Rev. Father Burke, the legal agent of the association, under
