340a PAST AND PRESENT OF of Prince Edward Island ; Lieut. J. A. Long- worth, now Lieutenant-Colonel; Lieut. John A. Bell , No. 2 Company. Drill and preparation for active service was continued for some time with great zest in expectation of a call to the field, until Major Irving was informed from headquar¬ ters that the artillery branch of the service being fully completed from the Upper Prov¬ inces, these troops would not be required. Lieutenant-Colonel Stewart (then Cap¬ tain of No. 3 Company) of Eighty-second Battalion, and Captain T. S. McLeod , after¬ wards Colonel commanding the regiment, also volunteered their services and battalion orders were immediately issued to form two service companies. Captain Stewart was to command No. i Service Company and Cap¬ tain McLeod No . 2. These were accepted for service and made active preparations, and were fully organized and complete in their equipments and ready to proceed three days after receiving orders. They remained thirteen days under arms at the drill shed; but sufficient forces having been organized nearer the scene of action, word was re¬ ceived that the services of these brave Is¬ landers was not required. The promptness displayed at the hour of danger has inspired a confidence in our militia that adds to the strength of the nation. This was still more practically illustrated at the time of the war, when, in 1899, our soldiers went to the field of battle, many losing their lives, fighting for Queen and Empire in the decisive battles of that great contest.
