William Moffatt received his educa¬ tion in his native land and in 1843 came to Prince Edward Island and settled in Lot 23, near New Glasgow . He followed farming throughout his life and died on the 29th of May, 1870. He was the father of six chil¬ dren, James, Robert, John, Margaret, Isabella and Agnes. He was a member of the Presby¬ terian church and in politics a Liberal. The son secured all his education in the district schools, and under his father's in¬ structions learned the secrets of successful agriculture, and upon attaining mature years entered actively upon this pursuit on his own account. He is now the owner of one hun¬ dred and thirty-three acres of land, one hun¬ dred and twenty of which are under til¬ lage, and here he carries on general fanning and stock raising, engaged also to some ex¬ tent in dairying:-^Hehas been successful to a gratifying degree and is numbered among the leading agriculturists of his community. In politics Mr. Moffatt is a Literal. His first vote was cast under unfavorable circum¬ stances, it being necessary for him to travel twenty miles through a severe storm in or¬ der to cast his vote, which was for Hon . George Coles , and his is the remarkable rec¬ ord of having never missed an election since that time. He is a member of the Presby¬ terian church, and for fifty years was pre¬ centor in that society. He is now an elder in the church at New Glasgow . In 1847 Mr. Moffatt was united in mar¬ riage to Miss Jane Arthur , a daughter of James and Mary (Barr) Arthur, natives of Glasgow, Scotland , and to them have been born six children, namely: William, a farmer in Mayfield ; James, who was a farmer in the state of , but is now deceased; Arte- mas, who resides on the homestead, is a Lib¬ eral in politics and a member of Court Non¬ pareil, No. 1113, Independent Order of For¬ esters; Mary, the deceased wife of John Mc ¬ Donald; Margaret, wife of the late P. P. Archibald , the present proprietoress of the Queen Hotel, Charlottetown ; Janie, at home. Major Jones , who is successfully oper¬ ating a fine farm in Lot 17, Prince county, was born at St. Eleanors , on August 10, 1852, and is a son of George and Margaret (Green) Jones, the former a native of Bris¬ tol, England , and the latter a sister of Harry Compten Green. George Jones came to Prince Edward Island about 1830 and lo¬ cated at North St. Eleanor 's, but after a few years he bought a farm at St. Elean¬ or's, where he spent the remainder of his life, his death occurring on July 6, 1891. He was a man of public spirit and took an active interest in local public affairs. He was the father of eight children: Emma, deceased; Samuel, Charles, James and Sarah, in the United States; Richard F ., who is interested in farming with the subject of this sketch; Harry, in the United States, and Major, the subject of this sketch. The latter spent his school days at St. Eleanor's and afterward continued the opera¬ tion of the home farm, subsequently purchas¬ ing the same from his father. Later, in part¬ nership with his brother Richard, he bought additional land and they now own two hun¬ dred and thirty acres, most of which is under cultivation and devoted to mixed farming.
