A ., who is a suc¬ cessful lobster shipper at Alberton , was born at Glasgow, Scotland , on the 22d of August, 1854, and is a son of John and Jean (Mc- Culloch) Agnew, both natives of Wickton- shire, Scotland . The paternal grandfather, William Agnew , who was a native of the same place, was of old Scotch stock and dur¬ ing his active years was engaged in agricul¬ tural pursuits. The subject's father removed to Glasgow shortly after his marriage and there for many years conducted a hotel. Of his eight children the subject of this sketch was the seventh in order of birth. One sister still resides in Glasgow, another sister married Joseph Bell , an engineer, and moved to Ceylon, where she died, while a brother, who was a graduate of Glasgow University and a successful teacher, died in that city in 1895. John Agnew , subject of this sketch, spent his school days in Glasgow and after¬ ward entered a commission agent's office where he was employed some four or five years. He then emigrated to Canada , lo¬ cating first in Richibucto, New Brunswick , but about a year and a half later came to Prince Edward Island , and after spending a couple of years in Alberton , employed as a clerk in a mercantile establishment, he en¬ gaged in the lobster, mackerel and meat can¬ ning business, in which he has done an ex¬ tensive business. He has a fully equipped lobster factory at , and during late years he has engaged extensively in buy¬ ing the output of a number of other factories, shipping the same to the Scandinavian mar¬ kets and to , Germany, Russia and other European countries. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1904, and is now an active member of that body. He has taken an active part in local commercial af¬ fairs-and has served efficiently as president of the Alberton Board of Trade from its organization. On December 22, 1882, Mr. Agnew mar¬ ried Miss Agnes I. Ireland , a sister of the Rev. George D . Ireland, of Woodstock , New Brunswick , and daughter of the late Captain James Ireland , of Prince Edward Island , and to them have been born the following chil¬ dren : Annie Florence , the wife of Ralph Fielding , of , Manitoba ; William Edward ; John Alex ; Effie Jean ; Daisy Irene ; Alex McCulloch ; George D. Ireland ; Helen Stewart and a baby, unnamed. Fra¬ ternally Mr. Agnew is a member of the In¬ dependent Order of Odd Fellows and the In¬ dependent Order of Foresters. He is a mem¬ ber of the Presbyterian church at Alberton , and chairman of its official board. He is public spirited in his attitude toward local public affairs and occupies a high standing in the community. James Carruthers , who is actively en¬ gaged in the cultivation of a splendid farm at North Bedeque and who occupies a de¬ servedly high standing among his fellow citi¬ zens, is a native of Prince Edward Island , having been born on the 5th of December, 1842, and is a son of Samuel and Sophia ( Muttart) Carruthers, the father having been born in 1802, and died in 1874, at the age of seventy-two years.
