the Island in the year 1786, for the first deed from Governor Patterson is dated April 4, 1786. He came from county Clare, Ireland, bringing with him a family of five daughters and two sons, having‘left one daughter mar- ried in Ireland. The sons’ names were Thomas and William,.the latter being a mem- ber of the first House of Assembly and also a captain in the militia. The Hydes of West River are descended from William, who married a Miss Simpson from Cavendish, their family being six daughters and four sons. The daughters were Mrs. Cameron, Cove Head; Mrs. Stewart, De Sable; Mrs. Godd, Arcola, Illinois; and Elenor, Jen- net and Sarah, who were unmarried. The sons were: William, James, Thomas and John. William, who married Mary Brad- dock, had two daughters and six sons. The daughters were: Elenor, wife of David Mc— Ewen, West River, and Jane, wife of James Farquharson, Mermaid, East River. The sons were Samuel, Lemuel, William, Henry, Charles and Albert. Samuel had a family of seven daughters, who are all married. Lem- uel, William and Albert left no families, so the Hydes at West River at present are sons of Henry and Charles. Henry had five daughters and three sons: Frederick, Rob- ert and Harry; and Charles had one daugh- ter and two sons—Albert and Russell. Ar- temas Hyde, of Clyde River, and Duncan Hyde, of Cornwall, are sons of John Hyde, who had also seven daughters. The late \Villam Hyde, of Halifax, was also his son. Thomas Hyde’s family removed to the United States a number of years ago, and made their home in Wisconsin. James Hyde removed to Pictou, Nova Scotia, some sixty years ago, where he died, leaving no family. Thomas Hyde, the other son of the first Thomas Hyde, was also married and had a

The descendants of John now reside at Murray Harbor, one of them being a veteran 5m captain. The de~ scendants of William are somewhat scat- tered, only two being left on the Island— Francis Hyde and Mrs. Patterson, both of Charlottetown. JOSeph Hyde, another son, removed, with his family, to Winnipeg some five years ago; and the remainder of the family are in the United States.
WALTER MALLETT, a well known farmer in Lot 33, Queens county, was born near Ipswich, England, in May, 1832, and is the son. of Robert and Lydia (Braynton) Mal- lett, also natives of England. Robert Mal- lett came to Prince Edward Island in 1835, and settled on the present farm, where he fol- lowed agricultural pursuits. At that early day but few improvements had been made in the locality, roads were but few and in poor condition, farming methods were primitive in the extreme and much labor was required to reduce the land to a tillable condition; all of this was accomplished, however, and the place has been developed into one of the best farms in the community. Robert Mallett died in 1876, and his wife in 1868. They were the parents of four children, Robert, William, John and Walter. Walter Mallett attended the district schools in his youth and was reared to farming pursuits, which he has since always followed. He is now the owner of eighty-five acres of splendid land, which is well improved with a comfortable residence, substantial barn and other outbuildings and well kept fences. Here he carries on gen- eral farming and gardening and also raises some live stock.
