346 PAST AND PRESENT OF A. J. Murchison , M. D. , who has long enjoyed high prestige as a successful prac¬ titioner of the healing art, is a native son of Prince Edward Island , having been born at North River on July 19, 1864, being a son of Capt. Malcolm Murchison , of North River . The subject received his early education in the district schools and later attended the school for two years. He then entered Prince of Wales College, where he graduated in 1882, following which he en¬ gaged in teaching, being principal of the Pownall high school for two years. Having decided to adopt the medical profession, he then entered Trinity Medical College at To¬ ronto, where he received his degree of Doc¬ tor of Medicine in 1890. The same year he went to Scotland and attended the Royal In ¬ firmary, at Edinburgh, and there received the triple degrees of L. R. C. P . and S., Ed¬ inburgh; and L. F. P . and S., Glasgow. He also attended the St. Thomas Hospital, at London, and upon his return home at once began the active practice of his profession at Clyde River , where he has since resided. He possesses a comprehensive knowledge of his profession and has been a close reader of professional literature. His sterling qualities of character have won him many friends and he now enjoys a large and representative practice. He has held the office of coroner and health officer of Queens county and is now a member of the Medical Council of Prince Edward Island. In 1892 Dr. Murchison married Miss J. N. McQueen , of Ontario , and to them have been born five children. The Doctor is an active member of the Presbyterian church, being chairman of the board of trustees, and in politics gives his support to the Liberal party. Samuel Howard , an honored and old resident of Lot 32, Queens county, and who is now practically retired from the active duties of life, was born in Prince Edward Island in 1828, the son of William and Sarah (Golding) Howard. The father was born in Ireland and came to Prince Edward Is ¬ land in an early day. He was a successful farmer and purchased many years ago the place on which the subject now resides. He was the father of ten children, two of whom are now living, the subject of this sketch and Mrs. Harts , of Charlottetown . The sub¬ ject's farm comprises one hundred and sev¬ enty-five acres, which is all under the plow and finely improved, it being under the pres¬ ent management of his son. During his active years he vigorously prosecuted farm¬ ing operations, and owing to his sound judg¬ ment he met with a gratifying degree of suc¬ cess, being now enabled to take his ease in the enjoyment of that rest so richly earned. Mr. Howard 's son, Golding Howard , is also the owner of a fine farm and gives especial attention to dairy farming, having taken as high as three thousand two hundred pounds of milk at one time to the condensing factory, at Charlottetown . He was married in 1885 to Miss Harriett Hyde and they have three children: Edna I., who has acquired a high repute as a singer; David L .; and Edwin T. On the 10th of May, 1849, Samuel How ¬ ard was united in marriage to Miss Mary Ann Pye , a daughter of John and Mary (Golding) Pye, and to them have been born fourteen children, ten of whom reached ma¬ turity and three of whom are now active Methodist preachers. Mr. Howard is a Methodist, and has for many years been ac¬ tive in his church duties. In politics he is a Liberal and at all times takes a worthy in¬ terest in public affairs. He has lived long in
