34* PAST AND PRESENT OF John S. Mayhew , whose fine farm is eligibly located in Lot 32, Queens county, was bom on his present farm in 1850, and is the son of Zachariah and Celia (Cook) May - hew. The father was a native of England , born at Mitzfield, but while young accom¬ panied his parents to the subject's present farm, where he followed the pursuit of ag¬ riculture throughout his life. He was the father of nine children. John S. Mayhew was educated in the district schools, and upon attaining maturity, took up the pursuit of agriculture, which he has since followed. He owns one hundred and forty acres of land, one hundred and twenty-five acres of which are under the plow, and on which the im¬ provements are of the very best type. He carries on mixed farming, dealing some in stock and also paying some attention to dairy farming, being successful in all lines, his farm being today considered the equal of any in Lot 32. In 1878 Mr. Mahew married Miss Sarah Boyle , a daughter of Michael and Margaret Boyle. Michael Boyle was a na¬ tive of Ireland, and came to Prince Edward Island in 1817 and thereafter followed the pursuit of agriculture. He died in 1899, and his widow is still living at the age of eighty- three years. They were the parents of nine children. To the subject and his wife have been born five children: Walter G., Maude, Earl, Ethel and Helen. In politics Mr. May ¬ hew is a Liberal, though he has never aspired to public office of any nature. He takes a commendable interest in the welfare of his Tommunity and stands high in general public esteem. Thomas P. Cass , the owner of one of the best farms in Lot 31, Queens county, was born on this Island in February, 1865, and is the son of William and Margaret (Col¬ lins) Cass. William Cass was bom in 1820, was a farmer and in about 1856 removed from Cove' to South Wiltshire , settling on the farm now owned by his son, Thomas P. He was twice married, first to Margaret Collins , by whom he had three children, namely: Thomas P., William and Anna J., and after her death he married, in 1869, Margaret Leonard , by whom he be¬ came the father of four children, Mary, Em¬ ma, Cecelia and Katie. The subject's pa¬ ternal grandfather, who was a native of Eng¬ land, came to Prince Edward Island in 1800, and first settled on Black River , where he owned a large tract of land and dealt in real estate. In politics he was a Conservative and occupied a prominent place in his com¬ munity. Thomas P. Cass received his edu¬ cation in the district schools and was reared to the life of a farmer, which pursuit he intently followed after the completion of his education. He is the owner of two hundred and twenty acres of land, of which one hun¬ dred and seventy are under cultivation, the balance being woodlands. In addition to diversified farming, Mr. Cass gives large attention to the raising of shorthorn cattle, of which he has many fine specimens. He has been indefatigable in his efforts and by the exercise of sound judgment has achieved a marked degree of success. In politic- Mr. Cass votes with the Conservative party, while in religion he affiliates with the Catholic church. He has at all times taken a deep in¬ terest in the best welfare of his community and has served as a member of the school board. He possesses many sterling qualities of character and has won and retains the friendship of all who know him. In 1893 Mr. Cass married Miss Mary Trainer , the daughter of Patrick and Mary Trainer, who were born in Ireland, and came
