Mr. Brehant has always taken an active interest in all matters affecting the local public welfare and occupies an envi- able position in the esteem of his fellow citizens.
CHARLES LEANDER BARNES, M. D., L. R. C. P. and S., a leading member of his profession in Kings county, was born in Westmoreland county, New Brunswick, on Jaunary 21, 1857, and is a son of William A. and Caroline (Goodwin) Barnes, natives of Canada, though of English descent. The subject attended the common and superior schools of New Brunswick, followed by a course in the Collegiate School connected with the University of New Brunswick, at Fredericton. He later attended the New Brunswick Normal School, in which he was a member of the first class.
Having decided to adopt the medical profession, he entered the medical depart- ment of Bowdoin College ( Maine State Col— lege), graduating in 1884, and subsequently attended Queen’s University, taking the Licentiate of the Royal College of Physi- cians and Surgeons of Canada (with which it is affiliated) in 1894.
In 1884 he entered upon active practice in New Brunswick, but one year later came to his present location in Prince Edward Island. where he has since remained. He is well grounded in a theoretical knowledge of his profession and keeps in close touch with the latest advances in the healing art. On the 8th of August, 1894, the Doctor was married to Miss Annie I. Compton, who was born at Georgetown, Prince Edward Island. on the 6th of October, 1876, a daughter of Daniel and Agnes Compton, and to them have been born two children, Ethelyn Hilda and Harold Wilfrid Comp- ton. The family are members of the Church of England.
Fratemally the Doctor is a member of the Masonic order, while in politics he sup- ports the Liberal party. Dr. Barnes has contributed poetry to Rose-Belford and other periodicals, and to Songs of the Great Dominion. published in Great Britain. Dr. Barnes’ home is beautifully located at Mur- ray River in Kings county and his residence is one of the most modern and elegant struc— tures in the province.
VENANTIUS S.G1LL1s, asuccessful farmer and thoroughly competent land surveyor at Indian River, Prince county, was born at Miscouche, this province, on the 18th of May, 1835, and is a son of John P. and Cecily (McLellan) Gillis, both also natives of Miscouche, where the father followed farming and a general grocery business. They are both deceased, the mother having died in 1878 and the father in 1889. The paternal grandparents. Alexander and (McNeill) Gillis, and the maternal grand- parents, Archibald and Ann (Morrison) McLellan, were natives of Scotland and all emigrated to Prince Edward Island many years ago.
