MRS. MARY A. WILLIAMS, of Bideford. Prince county, widow of the late Albert Wil- liams, who died in 1902, at the age of fifty- nine years, is a daughter of William and Amelia (Watson) Hopgood. William Hop- good was born in Bideford, Devonshire, England, and came to Prince Edward Island in 1838, at the age of sixteen years, locating at Port Hill, Prince county. He attained to a lwding position in local public affairs. being collector of customs, clerk of the county court and a magistrate for the county. He died in February, 1905, at the age of eight) -three years. Amelia \N atson was the daughter of Dixon Watson, who came from Dumfries, Scotland, to Pugwash, Nova Scotia. William and Amelia Hopgood were the parents of the following children: Wil- liam Henry, deceased, who was a member of the firm of Reuben Tuplin & Company, at Kensington; Mary A., subject of this sketch: Priscilla, the wife of Abram Raynor, of Travelers Rest, this Island; Josephine, the wife of Percy Ellis, of Port Hill, Prince Ed- ward Island; John D., of Dorchester, Massa- chusetts; Leonora, wife of J. W. Brown, merchant, of Tyne Valley; James, a farmer at Cape Wolfe; Hume, in the employ of P. McNutt & Son, of Malpeque ; Jennie, wife of Fred Young, of Concord, New Hampshire. The subject’s paternal grandparents, Thomas and Mary (Yeo) Hopgood, came to Prince Edward Island in 1838. To Albert and Mary A. Williams were born the following children: H. W. Beecher, in the employ of Hon. William Richards, of Bideford: Ar- thur E., manager of the Bank of New Bruns- wick at Charlottetown; E. Bayfield, barrister at Sumnierside; R. Clifford, accountant in the Bank of Nova Scotia, at Boston, Massa— chusetts; Daisy, who is a graduate nurse of

the Prince Edward Island Hospital and is now at Bideford; Rebie, at home, and Claude, who operates the homestead farm.

0 . ALEXANDER ESDALE SMITH, the well

known and successful veterinary surgeon of Montague, Kings county, was born at New Perth, Prince Edward Island, on October 2, 1868, a son of Alexander and Janet (Pat- rick) Smith, the latter of whom was a native of Scotland. The father, who is a farmer by occupation, lives at New Perth. this Island, and is one of the leading and substantial citizens of his neighborhood. The subject of this sketch received his preliminary education in the district schools

' and in 1888 he entered the Ontario Veter-

inary College, where he took the full course and graduated in 189I with the degree of Veterinary Surgeon. Upon completing his technical education he first located at New Perth where he practiced one year, but in April, 1892, he settled at Montague, where he has since remained and where he has not only built up a successful practice but has installed himself thoroughly in the confi- dence and good will of his fellow citizens. In connection with his veterinary practice he runs a boarding stable and livery, and has in charge a number of the best animals in the neighborhood, and is also proprietor of the Royal Hotel. His services as a veterinarian have been in constant requisition and he has handled successfully some very critical cases. He is considered thoroughly competent and enjoys the respect of all who know him.
