Mr. Montgomery takes an intelligent interest in the general welfare of the community, his influence being always cast on the side of every worthy moral and benevolent movement. He is well known and is liked by all who know him.
J. W. BROWN, who occupies a high standing among the leading and successful business men of Prince county, having his business headquarters at Tyne Valley, Lot I 3, was born at South Wiltshire, Lot 31, and is a son of James Brown, now deceased. He received a good practical education in the public schools and during all his mature years has taken an active part in business matters. He was for six years engaged in business at Port Hill, but in 1895 located at Tyne Valley, where he has since been actively occupied. He is engaged in the buying and shipping of produce, grain of all kinds, pork, mutton, lambs, eggs. butter, potatoes, etc., and does a large export busi- ness, in addition to which he conducts the largest general merchandise establishment in this section of Prince county. He is a man of sterling integrity and keen business sagacity and stands high in the esteem of all who have had dealings with him. Fra- temally he is a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, and is the present deputy grand master of the grand lodge for Prince Edward Island, prior to which he had filled the various positions in the subor- dinate lodge. He is also a member of the Independent Order of Foresters and dur- ing the past seven years has been financial secretary of the court of that order at Tyne

Valley. Religiously he is a member of the Presbyterian church.
Mr. Brown married a Miss Hopgood, a daughter of the late William Hopgood and wife, the latter having borne the maiden name of Amelia Watson, her father, Dixon Watson, having come from Dumfries, Scot- land, to Pugwash, Nova Scotia. William Hopgood was clerk of the county court, mag- istrate and collector of customs at Port Hill, Lot I 3, and was a son of Thomas and Mary (Yeo) Hopgood, the latter being a sister of the late Hon. James Yeo, Sr. To Mr. and Mrs. Brown have been born the following children: Amelia Jane, now married to William H. Ellis, of Tyne Valley; Fannie Isabelle and George Waner.
SYLvAIN E. GALLANT, merchant, clerk of the county court of Prince county, justice of the peace, magistrate, and commissioner for the taking of affidavits, and who is highly esteemed by his fellow citizens because of his public spirit and fine personal qualities, was born at Cascumpec. Lot 5, Prince county. His parents were Mellem and Donitilde (Gaudet) Gallant, both natives of Prince Edward Island, the former born in Lot 5 and the latter at Malpeque, Lot 17. The father was road commissioner for years and stood high in public esteem. The paternal grandfather was Firmin Gal- lant, a native of Lot 5, who was married twice, first to Miss Sophie Blanchard, and second to Miss Louise Arsenault. who was the subject’s grandmother.
