PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND. 39 i born in Yorkshire, England , on the 27th of May, 1812, and at the age of five years was brought to this Island by his parents. He was here educated and reared to the life of a farmer, which has been his avocation all his life. To his union with Miss Anna Wig- gington, who was born in Yorkshire, Eng¬ land, on the 13th of November, 1816, there were born the following children: Chris¬ topher, of Sidney, Nova Scotia ; Elizabeth, the wife of Judson Ellis , of Rhode Island ; Matthew, the subject; Deborah, the wife of Thomas Bulpitt ; George, Sarah and Isaac, all deceased; Isaac, second, and John Prince , in California ; Mary Jane , the wife of a Mr. Lea . George Smith was an active man in politics and gave his support to the Liberal party. In religion he was a Metho¬ dist and stood for all things that promised to advance the best interests of the com¬ munity. Matthew Smith was educated in the dis¬ trict schools of his neighborhood and has followed farming mainly during the subse¬ quent years. He is also proprietor of the Pleasant View Hotel, one of the popular summer hotels of the Island, and receives a large patronage from tourists from the States and Ontario . He is an ideal host and gives his personal attention to every detail of the management of the caravansary. He is the owner of one hundred acres of fine land, all of which is under cultivation and well improved, and here he carries on a diversified system of agriculture, raising all the crops common to this locality. On August 31, 1870, Mr. Smith was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Elizabeth Lea , a daughter of William Lea , and to them have been born eight children, namely: William' L ., in California ; Edgar, of Boston, Massachusetts ; Annie B., the wife of J. B. Rackliffe, of Corinna, Maine; Hanefa Gladys , the wife of John McFarlan , of De- Sable; Claudine, of California ; Stewart Dunbar , of Boston, Massachusetts ; Helen May and Edna Lea , both at home. Mr. Smith is a member of the Methodist church and has served as steward for more than thirty years and as Sunday school superin¬ tendent for over twenty years. In politics he supports the Liberal party and is at present the member of the Legislative Assembly for the first district of Queens county. He has also been trustee and secretary of the school board for over a quarter of a century. He is public spirited in his attitude toward leading questions of the day, taking advanced ground in all movements that tend to ad¬ vance the community's best interests, and he enjoys an enviable standing among the leading men of the Island. James A. Robertson , an enterprising and successful merchant and the postmaster at Bonshaw . was born in this place on the 10th of December, 1861, and is a son of Alexander and Annie (Miller) Robertson. The paternal grandfather, James Robert ¬ son, was a native of Perthshire, Scotland , and the father of four children: Elizabeth, John, James and Alexander. The latter, who was born at Marshfield , St. Peter 's Road, on April 2, 1828, was educated in the district schools and took up the business of tanning and shoe manufacturing, which he followed throughout his life, also operating a general store at Bonshaw . His death occurred on December 14, 1880. To his marriage with Miss Annie Miller , a daugh¬ ter of James Miller , of Marshfield , were bom four children: Elizabeth, who died at the
