Fraternally, he is an appreciative member of the Inde¬ pendent Order of Odd Fellows and the Canadian Order of Foresters and stands high in the esteem of all who know him. G. H. Haszard , deceased, who stood high in the estimation of his fellow citizens of Charlottetown , where he had long occu¬ pied a commanding position in business cir¬ cles, was born in this city on June I, 1851. His parents, George Thomas and Margaret (Owen) Haszard, were also natives of Charlottetown . His paternal great-grand¬ father was an ardent loyalist and came to Prince Edward Island about the time of the war of the Revolution. The subject's grand¬ father, James D. Haszard , was the first pub¬ lisher of the Royal Gazette , in which enter¬ prise he continued for many years. He also took a deep and influential interest in the advancement of agriculture on the Island and was considered a progressive and repre¬ sentative citizen. George T. Haszard suc¬ ceeded his father as publisher of the Royal Gazette , which he continued for many years, was also publisher of a paper called the Protestant, and was the founder of the Char¬ lottetown Patriot, which he later sold to Hon . David Laird . He was the father of six children, of whom the subject of this sketch is the eldest. G. H. Haszard received his elementary education in the public schools, completing his studies in Prince of Wales College. About 1874 he became identified with the printing and binding business, entering into a partnership with P. S. McGowan . Six years later the latter gentleman withdrew and Mr. Haszard continued the business alone until 1891, when he formed a business association with Stewart C. Moore , under the firm name of Haszard & Moore, and remained so connected up to the time of his death, on August 16, 1905. Mr. Haszard possessed in a large degree those qualities which command the confidence and honest esteem of all who had dealings with him and in his death all who knew him felt a sense of personal bereavement. In August, 1889, Mr. Haszard was united in marriage to Miss Edith S. Moore , who was born in Charlottetown and who was a sister of his business associate, Stewart C. Moore , whose personal sketch appears elsewhere in this work. To them were born three children, Helen Margaret , Freida - Elanie and Gordon Thomas . Capt. J. A. McDonald , a well known barrister and stipendiary magistrate at Charlottetown , and who takes an active and prominent part in military matters, was born at New Glasgow , Prince Edward Island , on July 19, 1872, and is the son of John and Isabella (McKinnon) McDonald, the for¬ mer a native of the Isle of Skye , and the lat¬ ter of Prince Edward Island . The father emigrated to Prince Edward Island and for a number of years was engaged in teaching school, finally locating at New Glasgow . The mother is a sister of Rev. John McKin ¬ non, who for several years was a well known Presbyterian preacher of this Island.
