The subject's parents were Linus and Barbara (Keough) McMillan, both natives of Prince Edward Island , the former born at Claremont and the later at St. Eleanor's. Linus McMillan received a public school education, supplemented by a course at Prince of Wales College, after which he was engaged in teaching school in the western part of the Island. He later engaged in business in Summerside and re¬ mained there until 1878, when he removed to Charlottetown and accepted the position of engrossing clerk in the registry office, holding this position until his death, which occurred in July, 1884. He was the father of six children, of whom the subject of this sketch is the fourth in order of birth. Louis B. McMillan atended the Char¬ lottetown public schools, and in 1884 he engaged in clerking, being so occupied until 1890, when he received the appointment of government messenger. In this capacity he was thrown much in contact with every de¬ partment in the government building. In 1901 Mr. McMillan was appointed to the re¬ sponsible position which he now occupies, that of secretary of public works. The duties of .this position are manifold and important, but the subject's ability and energy have enabled him to discharge them all in an eminently satisfactory manner. On October 14, 1902, Mr. McMillan was married to Miss May Carrol , a native of Charlottetown , and a daughter of John Car ¬ roll, an old and respected resident of this city. One child, Helen Gertrude , has been born to this union. Mr. McMillan takes an active part in athletic sports and is a mem¬ ber of the Caledonia Club, while he is also a member of the Catholic Mutual Benefit Association and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoys an extensive acquaintance and is well liked by all who know him. E. H. Beer , member of the well known firm, the Mark Wright Furnishing Company, who was one of its principal organizers, was born in Charlottetown , November 17, 1867, and is the son of George R. and Lenora Ann (Weatherbe) Beer, and the gramU'ii of Hon . George Beer , of Devonshire , Eng¬ land. Mr. Beer attended the public schools of Charlottetown , completing his education in Prince of Wales College, after which he entered the employ of the Merchants' Bank of Prince Edward Island in the ca¬ pacity of ledger keeper. In 1888, upon the death of his father, he retired from the bank and engaged in the fire insurance business, in which he was successful and which he has continued to the present time. In the meantime he has acquired an interest in the joint stock concern of Mark Wright & Com¬ pany, Ltd., and in 1903, when the affairs of this company were liquidated in conjunc¬ tion with Mr. Wright , Mr. Beer purchased the wholesale and retail portion of the business and organized the firm since known as the Mark Wright Furnishing Company, now one of the most substantial and prosper¬ ous business houses on the Island. They carry a complete and comprehensive line of house furnishing goods of every description, and are located on Sunnyside, the main building, all of which is occupied by them, having a frontage of fifty feet.
