Alexander John McFadyen , a well- to-do and enterprising merchant at Tig- nish, was born at Augustine Cove , Prince county, Prince Edward Island , on Septem¬ ber 17, 1848, and is a son of John and Mar¬ garet (McLean) McFadyen, who are farming people and very highly respected in their community. Alexander McFadyen received his education in the district schools of his neighborhood and at the Summerside Grammar School. His first active employ¬ ment was as a clerk with J. H. Myrick , at Tignish , with whom he engaged on June 1, 1868. His faithful service in this line was rewarded and recognized, when, on January 1, 1886, he was admitted to a partnership in the firm of J. H. Myrick & Company. They are numbered among the leading busi¬ ness firms of this part of Prince Edward Is ¬ land and because of their fair methods of dealing with the public, they have won the confidence and regard of their fellow citizens which has brought to them increased busi¬ ness. They carry a large and complete line of merchandise, such as is in demand by the local trade, and exert every effort to satisfy their patrons. Mr. McFadyen was married at Alberton , on March 8, 1870, to Miss Gertrude Eleanor Hubbard , a daugh¬ ter of Capt. William Hubbard , and to them have been bom the following children: Sybil Sarah , born May 8, 1871; Kate, born Au¬ gust 30, 1874; Philip Edwin , born February 20, 1876; Benjamin Rogers , born March 19, 1877; John Young , born July 11, 1880; and Kenneth Alexander , born January 31, 1888. A man of many fine personal qualities and possessed of good business ability, Mr. Mc- Fayden has long occupied a high position in the community in which he lives. Nearly three score years he has lived among this pebple, and now there is none that does not do him reverence. George H. Cook , who enjoys the repu¬ tation of being the pioneer photographer, now in the business at Charlottetown , and who stands high among his fellow citizens, was born in this city on June 24, 1850. His father, Thomas Cook , who was a native of Devonshire , England , married Elizabeth Harris , also a native of England ; they came to Prince Edward Island and located on the Malpeque , at Greenvale , where he remained a few years. He then located in the Char¬ lottetown , where for several years he was successfully engaged in farming. At length he was enabled to retire from the ac¬ tive duties of life and removed to Charlotte - town, where he spent the remaining years of his life. Of his eight children, George H. was the seventh in order of birth. He spent his boyhood days in Charlottetown and after his school days were ended he learned the business of photography with Cyrus Lewis , with whom he remained for some years. He then bought out Mr. Lewis and has since continued the business, being very successful artistically and financially from the beginning, and he now enjoys a high reputation as an up-to-date and high- class photographer, commanding a large and representative custom.
