PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND.
in Scotland and also a session in the normal school at Glasgow. After coming to Prince Edward Island in 1873 he attended the grammar school at Malpeque and thence ob- tained a scholarship which entitled him to two years’ atendance at Prince of Wales College. In 1877 he began teaching in Mal- peque and after a short time was called to Summerside, where he received the appoint- ment of principal of the Eastern District School. In 1879 on the opening of the high school at Summerside he became superin- tendent of the Summerside schools, which position he retained until December, 1893, when he resigned to take up the study of law in the office of John H. Bell, barrister at Summerside. As a teacher he was an unqualified success and under his leader- ship the Summerside schools reached a high standard of efficiency. His personal influ- ence over his pupils was strongly marked and many of them are now occupying posi- tions of prominence both in the United States and Canada, still retaining their old loyalty and attachment to Mr. McLeod. He finished his course of legal study with A. B. Warburton, Esq., for whom he opened a branch office at Summerside. In 1899 he was admitted as an attorney and the follow-
ing year was admitted to the bar of Prince '
Edward Island. He then became a member of the legal firm of \Varburton. McKinnon &McLeod, this relation being maintained until Mr. McKinnon’s appointment as lieu- tenant governor of the province, since which time Mr. McLeod has continued the practice alone. In December, 1886, Mr. McLeod married Miss Ada Ramsey, daughter of Wil- liam B. Ramsey, of Summerside, their marriage having been blessed with a family of eight sons. .
In politics Mr. McLeod is an independent Liberal, generally supporting the Liberal

party both in federal and local politics. He is not however a narrow partisan, but ready to appreciate the good on both sides. For many years he has been a member of the board of directors of the Pioneer Publish- ing Company which controls one of the lead- ing Liberal papers of the province. As a citizen he identifies himself with everything that makes for the material, intellectual and moral progress of the community. He is a prominent member of the Board of Trade, being at present one of the members of the council and is one of the directors of the Summerside public library. This excellent free library was funded mainly through Mr. McLeod’s exertions and his steady interest. in its welfare has been largely instrumental in keeping it up. .
Socially Mr. McLeod is very popular. He belongs to the Independent Order of Foresters and is also a Freemason and holds honorary positions in the Yacht Club and Crystal Hockey team. Outside of business his chief interest lies in the studying of mod- ern literature and science, and his aim in later years as well as in his teaching days has been to make this a means of culture to others especially to young people. By means of lectures and otherwise he has from time to time publicly presented many popular aspects of the science of chemistry and phys- ics. Some of his recent lectures have been “The Borderland of Life,” “Evolution,” “The Gospel by Carlyle,” and “Emerson in American Literature.” He is now in his fifty-third year and to all appearances has many years of usefulness yet before him.
