524 PAST AND PRESENT OF Queens county, and is a son of Patrick Bam ¬ brick, who came to this province from County Wexford , Ireland, locating on a farm which he afterwards successfully operated. His wife bore the maiden name of Margaret Phalen , who was also a native of Ireland. Patrick Bambrick received his elementary education in the common schools of the neighbourhood and in 1870 located on his present farm, which was at that time in its original wild condition, and at once entered upon the arduous task of clearing and de¬ veloping it into an up-to-date farm, in which laudable endeavor he has been eminently successful. He now owns one hundred and fifty acres of land, one hundred acres of which is cleared and on which is located a fine residence, substantial bam and other necessary farm buildings. The soil is maintained in an excellent state of locality. Mr. Bambrick served for some time as inspector of roads, performing much efficient service for this Island. He is a Liberal in politics and takes a deep interest in local public affairs. He married Miss Eunice McPhee , a daughter of Hugh and Catherine ( McEach- ern) McPhee. and a niece of Bishop Mc- Eachern, and to their union were born the following children: Thomas, of , British Columbia ; Urban Patrick , at home; Maude, Ella and Catherine, who reside in Boston, Massachusetts ; Margaret, the wife of Patrick Hughes , of Morrell East. Prince Edward Island . David Ross , who for thirty-four years has been known as one of the leading mer¬ chants at Kinross , the business being now conducted by his son, J. H. Ross , is a native of this locality and received his education here in the public schools. He began busi¬ ness in 1864 and during all the subsequent years was not only active and successful in his private affairs, but occupied a leading and influential position in the activities of the community. In addition to mercantile busi¬ ness he engaged in lobster packing, in which he was successful. He also spent two years up the Yukon river in Alaska , where he en¬ gaged in mining. In the last fifteen years he has served as justice of the peace, while in politics he has been an active support to the Conservative party. Mr. Ross is a son of Donald and Flora (Nicholson) Ross, the father having been for many years a successful farmer and con¬ tractor and builder in Lot 50. He died in 1854, at the age of fifty years. The paternal grandfather, Lauchlin Ross , was a native of Scotland and came to Prince Edward Is ¬ land in about 1816, locating on a farm in Lot 57. He married in Scotland Miss Catherine Martin . The subject's mother was a daughter of Donald Nicholson , who came to Prince Edward Island on the ship "Polly" in 1803 from Stenchael, Isle of Skye , Scot¬ land. In 1804 he returned to his native land and the following year brought out a ship load of emigrants, having during this trip married Miss Jessie Nicholson . He located at Orwell Cove , Lot 57, on a farm of five hundred acres of land which he after¬ ward disposed of. Here he built and oper¬ ated grist and saw mills and shipped large quantities of timber to Newfoundland . He was a magistrate, serving in connection with Allen McDougal . They were considered the leading citizens in the Belfast district at that time. He was appointed to settle all disputes and held court as a judge under the existing law. He was successful in all
