J. A. MATHESON, the present capable inspector of fisheries, is a native son of Prince Edward Island, having been born at

a son of John and Anne Matheson, both of whom were natives of Scotland. The pa- ternal grandfather. Roderick Matheson, who was born in Scotland, came to Prince Ed- ward Island in 1806. Before coming from Scotland he bought six hundred acres of land at Portage. Previous to coming here he had been a sea captain and he made the Island his home during the remainder of his life, dying at the remarkable age of one hundred and two years. His wife died at the age of ninety-nine years, and'as they had married early in life, there is little doubt that they passed their diamond wedding anniversary. John Matheson lo- cated at Black River. Brackley Point, where he engaged in shipbuilding. in which he did quite an extensive business, being also an active sea captain. He was the father of eight children, of whom the subject is the ‘fourth in order of birth.

J. A. Matheson secured his early educa- tion in the public schools at Brackley Point. completing his training at Prince of Wales College. In 1863 he moved to Alberton and entered the employ of Governor How- land, who ran a general merchandise busi— ness, remaining there sixteen months. He then engaged with Herbert Bell, of the same place, with whom he remained two and a

half years. after which he engaged on his own account in the fishing and general mer- chandise business, establishing stores at Miminegash and Campbellton, eight miles apart, in which he continued until 1897, when he accepted his present oflicial posi- tion as inspector of fisheries. In 1881 Mr. Matheson was elected to the Provincial Leg- islature as a representative from the first district of Prince county. He was opposed to going into politics but because of the peculiar condition of affairs he felt com- pelled to accept the proffered nomination and was re-elected to the position continu- ously until 1893. He was a capable legis-

lator and served his constituents faithfully,

looking after their best interests in the way of legislative enactment.

On July 20. 1881. Mr. Matheson was united in marriage to Miss Emily M. Clow- ser, a native of England. Fratemally Mr. Matheson is a member of the time-honored order of Freemasonry and is held in the highest regard by all who know him.

SIXTUS MCLELLAN, an enterprising and successful merchant tailor in Charlottetown. was born at Grand River, Lot 14. Prince county, Prince Edward Island. on August 12, 1861, the son of Joseph and Ann (McKinnon) Mc- Lellan, both also natives of Grand River. The paternal and maternal grandfathers, Angus McLellan and Alexander McKinnon. were both natives of Scotland. the former born on the Island of Uist. Grandfather' McLellan was a seafaring man, but eventu- ally came to Prince Edward Island and took up farming, which he followed during the remainder of his life. Joseph McLellan also
