James Ewen Matthews , a highly re¬ spected citizen of Charlottetown and a mem¬ ber of the reliable insurance agency of Ross & Matthews, was born in Albany, Prince county, Prince Edward Island , on August 17, 1869, and 1 S a son °f Donald and Flora (McMillan) Matthews, the former being now deceased. The subject is descended from old Scottish stock, his great-grand¬ father, John Matthews , having been born in Kintyre, Scotland . When quite young John Matthews emigrated to Prince Edward Island , and here married Miss Margaret Taylor , who also was a native of Scotland , and who, at the age of ten years, came to Prince Edward Island with her father in the "key" (or quay) of Campbellton . The Taylors took passage for Long Island , New York , but the Stewarts, who owned or com¬ manded the vessel, landed them at Prince- town, Prince Edward Island . To John and Margaret Matthews were born ten children, five sons of five daughters, the sons being Alexander (grandfather of the subject of this sketch), John, Hugh, Donald and James Alexander Matthews married Mary Brand- er, and these two lived and died on their farm at Malpeque , the former dying in 1880, aged eighty-four years. Four of their fam¬ ily have passed to the Great Beyond, namely: Donald, who moved to Albany; John, of Wilmot Valley ; Hugh, who inherited his father's property, and Margaret, of Mal¬ peque, the first named having died in 1888, at the age of sixty-eight years. Those now living are William, of Elmsdale : James, of Nevada ; Alexander, of Boston; Mrs. White and Mrs. George Brander , of Northport , Nova Scotia , and Ann, of Malpeque . Donald Matthews worked in his youth at shipbuilding, but in his early manhood he moved to Albany, Prince county, where he became a successful and representative farmer. The subject's maternal grand¬ father, Ewen McMillan , was born on the Isle of Mull and, with his widowed mother, came to Prince Edward Island in 1807 from Scotland , in a brig commanded by Captain Salmon . He died about forty-five years ago at the age of eighty-nine years. He had married Catherine McDon ¬ ald, who was born in Ulva, Scotland , and who died about forty-seven years ago at the age of seventy-four years. His father, Dun¬ can McDonald, after coming to , settled at River Denis, , where he died. One son, Neil McMillan , and two daughters, Mrs. Alexander Cameron and Mrs. James Cameron , of Albany, have passed away, Mrs. Mathews being the only sur¬ viving member of this family. She lives on the old homestead at Albany, along with her stepson and stepdaughter, Gordon and Janie. J. E. Matthews received his early educa¬ tion in the district school, and later attended Prince of Wales College. He then engaged in teaching school, being located at Wilmot Valley three years, Albany three years and Searleton two years and was regarded as a highly successful teacher. In May, 1894, he engaged in journalism, beginning as city editor of the Guardian. In Novem¬ ber, 1898, he transferred to the Patriot, and shortly afterward his energy and ability brought for him a promotion to the position of manager of that paper, the duties of which he discharged with eminent success.
