On March 20, 1889, Mr. Smallwood was married to Miss Ada L. Hutchings , a na¬ tive of St. John's, Newfoundland , and a daughter of Charles Hutchings , of that place- To this union have been born two children, Vivian Cuthbert , and Cyril Gerard , the lat¬ ter deceased. Hon . Stanislaus Blanchard , judge of the county court of Kings county, is a native of Prince Edward Island , having been born at Rustico , Queens county, on March 25, 1854, and a son of Marin J. and Anuie (Martin) Blanchard, both also natives of the same place. The paternal grandfather, Joseph Blanchard , was a native of Acadia, who came to Prince Edward Island and settled at Rustico , where he followed farm¬ ing to some extent. He was also a sea cap¬ tain and was drowned while on a voyage. The subject's father was a school teacher in his early years, and was one of the pro¬ moters and the first cashier of the Farmers' Bank of Rustico, holding the position from the organization of the bank in 1861 until his death, which occurred in 1878. He was the father of eleven children, of whom the subject of this sketch is the youngest in order of birth. Stanislaus Blanchard secured his ele¬ mentary education in the schools conducted by his father, after which he attended College. In 1876 he commenced reading law with the present Chief Justice Sulivan , and at the November term, 1881, he was admitted to the bar. He became the junior partner in the firm of Bayfield & Blanchard, a business association which was maintained until 1905, when the subject was appointed judge of the county court of Kings county. In 1894 the Judge was appointed stipendiary magistrate for Kings county, and was appointed to this position in 1903 for Queens county, holding both positions until his appointment to the bench, when he re- singed. In 1900 he was made a Kings Counsel . The judge has taken a live interest in educational matters and during the past ten years he has served as chairman of the Charlottetown city school board. During the past twenty-five years he has served ac¬ ceptably as the organist at St. Dunstan's cathedral. On September 6, 1883, Judge Blanchard was married to Miss Alvina Painchaud , a native of , and a daughter of J. B. F. Painchaud , collector of cus¬ toms at Amherst , . To them have been born the following children: J. M. C . is a student at St. Francis Xavier College, at Antigonish, Nova Scotia ; Mary Ethel , Lucy Josephine , Eugenie, Bessie, Jo¬ seph Wilford, Mary Antoinette , Mary, Lou¬ is Stanislaus, Albert Edward and Ida. Fra¬ ternally Judge Blanchard is a member of the Catholic Mutual Benefit Association and the Knights of Columbus. George E. Hughes , one of the leading and public spirited citizens of Charlotte - town, is a native of that city, his natal day having been April 5, 1853. His paternal grandfather, George A. Hughes , was born at Halifax, Nova Scotia , February 8, 1790, and, according to the old Hughes family
