PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND.
Bible, which is now in possession of J. D. Story, of Bedford, Nova Scotia, he was the eighth born in a family of nine children. The subject’s parents were Frederick W. and Margaret (Binns) Hughes, the former a na- tive of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and the latter of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. George E. Hughes received his education in private schools and in Prince of Wales College and St. Dunstan’s. He then en- gaged in the study of medicine for four years under the preceptorship of Dr. Frank D. Beer, of Charlottetown. In 1872 he en— gaged in the drug business with Dr. S. \V. Dodd, on the corner of Queen and Grafton streets (known as Medical Hall), and two years later romoved to his present location, known as the Des Brisaycomer, wherea drug business has been carried on continuously since 1810. In 1902 the present handsome and well arranged building was erected by the Des Brisay estate and Mr. Hughes 0c- cupied his present store room, which is com- modious and well equipped in every detail. Here a large number of proprietary medi- cines and special remedies are prepared and a large wholesale drug trade is carried on. The house has a splendid reputation for the absolute purity of its products and en— joys a large patronage. Mr. Hughes was also a prime mover in the organization of the Prince Edward Island Development and Tourist Association, of Charlottetown, of which he is the president. The object of the association is to develop and increase sum- mer travel to Prince Edward Island. and particularly to Charlottetown. Mr. Hughes is also a director of the Provincial Exposi- tion Association. He served eight years as a member of the Charlottetown city coun— cil and took an active part in the advancing of the best interests of the city. In 1901

he was elected a member of the Legislative Assembly to represent Charlottetown and Royalty, and in 1904 he was re-elected, and is now a member of the Executive Council. Mr. Hughes is also an ex-president of the Board of Trade. His fraternal affiliations are with the Free and Acepted Masons, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Independent Order of Foresters.
DR. S. J. MCKENNA, who occupies a high standing in his profession in this 10- cality, was born in Lot 48, Prince Edward Island, on January 23, 1872, and is a son of Bernard and Elizabeth (Casey) McKenna. both of whom were born in Limerick, Ire- land, and came to Prince Edward Island in 1834, settling near Charlottetown. Here the father followed farming for many years and in 1890 retired‘from active life and removed to Charlottetown, where he is still living, at the age of seventy-eight years. He was quite successful in business affairs and has since owned five hundred acres of fine farming land. He was the father of eight children, namely: James, a farmer in L0t 48; Elizabeth is the wife of George Scott, a grocer in Boston, Massachusetts; Mary became the wife of Pat McManus, a farmer in Lot 48; Florence is the wife of John B. Smith, civil engineer in British Co- lumbia; Francis is a farmer in Lot 48 and married Miss Hynes; Annie M. became'the wife of Peter McGuigan, an engineer at Sidney; the subject of this sketch is the next one in birth, and Gertrude, deceased. The father of these children was a Liberal in politics and took an active interest in pub- lic affairs, though he never held an ofl'ice. In religion he was a consistent Catholic.
