Robert Cairns McLeod passed his school days in Dunstaffnage and in young manhood went to Summerside and took a position as bookkeeper with R. T. Holman . He sub¬ sequently went into business on his own ac¬ count, being engaged chiefly in buying prod¬ uce. He afterward took up the carriage and implement business in partnership with John West , but soon afterward bought out the later's interest and carried on the busi¬ ness on his own account For four years he was a member of the Summerside town council and in 1883 became its chairman. From the time of its organization he served as president of the Summerside board of trade, was for a number of years chairman of the school board and in 1900 was elected to the provincial legislature for the fifth district of Prince county, being appointed a member of the executive council the same year. About a year previous to his death, Mr. McLeod was compelled, owing to con¬ tinued ill health, to retire from active public life, a fact deeply regretted by all who knew him. A splendid speaker, a keen de¬ bater and able man, he was regarded as one of the leading citizens of this province, while in private and business life he enjoyed un¬ bounded confidence and respect. On July 11. 1883, Mr. McLeod married Miss - Mar¬ garet McRae, of Kingston , Ontario , a daugh¬ ter of Daniel McRae , a native of Scotland . The latter came to Canada as an officer in Her Majesty's service Seventy-First Regi¬ ment, and upon completion of his period of service he located at Kingston , where he died in 1886. Mrs. McLeod was educated in the schools of Kingston and came to- Prince Ed - Ward Island in 1876 and here finished her education in the normal school, after which she was engaged in teaching in Summerside . To her marriage with Mr. McLeod were born the following children: Lionel Stanley , who lives at home, was educated in the pub¬ lic schools and Prince of Wales College; Alice Gwendolia , deceased; Marion Louise ; Henry Morton , and Marjorie Gordon . Robert Thompson , a prosperous and enterprising miller and fanner in Lot 34, Queens county, was born on this Lot in, 1857 and is a son of Isaac and Margaret ( Roder ¬ ick) Thompson. The father was a native of Dunbar, Scotland , and came to Prince Edward Island many years ago, settling in Lot 34, where he engaged in milling, oper¬ ating a large and well equipped grist .mill successfully up to the time of his death. Robert Thompson secured m> education in the district schools and upon attainmg-ma- ture years became an assistant to his father in the mill. After the latter's death Mr. Thompson added a sawmill and has actively operated both enterprises ever since.- In connection with his miling business-he oper¬ ates a farm of one hundred and forty-three acres located at Suffolk and on- which - he carries on a diversified system of agriculture raising all the products common to this latitude. He is up-to-date in his methods and the general appearance of the place indicates the owner to be a man of sound judgment. Many permanent and substan¬ tial improvements have been made and the place is considered one of the finest farms on the Winter river.
