5So PAST AND PRESENT OF In 1893 Mr. Thompson married Miss Maud Vessey , a daughter of George and Margaret (Mayborn) Vessey. The father, who follows farming in Lot 34, was born in this lot on September 23, 1834, and is a son of Robert and Elizabeth (Belle) Vessey, natives of Yorkshire, England , who came to Prince Edward Island in 1819. Mr. Thompson supports the Liberal party in poli_ tics, though not a seeker after public office of any nature, while his religious adherence is with the Presbyterian church. He pos¬ sesses many sterling qualities of character and is well liked by all who know him. James McDonald , V. S ., a leading mem¬ ber of his profession in the western part of Prince Edward Island , was born at Kelly's Cross, this Island, on June 24, 1865, and is a son of James and Catherine (McMurrow) McDonald, both also natives of Kelly's Cross. The paternal grandfather. Ewen McDonald , who was a native of the north of Ireland, came to Prince Edward Island in the '20s and located at Kelley's Cross, where he followed farming. Here the sub¬ ject's father engaged in blacksmithing and carriagemaking, being the only one en¬ gaged in the latter line of industry in that district. He is still residing at Kelly's Cross where he devotes his attention to farming, having retired from his former pursuits. Of his eight children, the subject of this sketch was the second in order of birth. The Doctor received his early schooling at Kelly's Cross and then entered the drug store of J. A. Gourlie at Summerside , where he remained two years. He then entered the Ontario Veterinary College at Toronto , where he graduated in April, 1890, with honors on every subject. He then returned to Prince Edward Island and entered upon the practice of his profession at side, combining with it a livery business. The latter line was continued until 1902 when the Doctor sold it out. In 1892 Doc¬ tor McDonald opened up a drug store, which he has since operated with success and profit. He has a complete and well furnished veterinary stable and has been very suc¬ cessful in the practice. He is an extensive advertiser, does a large business in proprie¬ tary medicines of which he owns a number of veterinary remedies of his own com¬ pounding, some twenty-two in all, and in these, in addition to a large local trade, he is making heavy shipments to the upper provinces. He is also the owner of a num¬ ber of valuable city properties at side and is considered among the well-to-do citizens of the town. Fraternally he is a member of the Independent Order of For¬ esters and the Catholic Mutual Benefit Asso¬ ciation. The Doctor is a man of fine per¬ sonal qualities and genial personality and enjoys the high regard of all who know him. JB. E. Longworth , a practical and pro¬ gressive farmer and stock raiser of lottetown , was born on his present place on March 14, i 860, and is a son of Henry and Henrietta (Webster) Long- worth. The father was a native of this , carried on farming pursuits throughout his life and died in 1895, at the age of eighty-one years.
