of the finest farms on the Island, and the place being on a gentle incline the whole area can be seen from the rear line fence- The entire tract is under the plow and here Mr. Essery carries on general farming, rais- ing some stock and doing some dairying. He has taken a deep interest in educational matters and for years has been a member of the school board. In politics he supports the Liberal party, while in religion he is afiiliated with the Methodist church.

In 1877 Mr. Essery married Miss May Holman, a daughter of James and Martha (West) Holman, natives of Devonshire. England, and to them have been born six children: James, William R., Albert J., Louise, Henry C and Fred C. Mr. Essery is a public spirited citizen and a man of wide general information and stands high in the estimation of the public.

RICHARD STOCKMAN, a practical farmer in Lot 33, Queens county, was born in Dev- onshire, England, on New Year’s eve, I833. and is a son of Henry and Grace (Angel) Stockman. These parents were both natives of England and came to Prince Edward 15— land in 1847, settling on the subject’s present farm which the father cleared in part. He was an active and energetic worker and succeeded in bringing the place to a high standard of cultivation and stood well in the estimation of his fellow agriculturists. Richard Stockman received the advantage of a good district school education and was reared under the practical instructions of his father. Upon attaining mature years he took up farming on his own account and is now the owner of one hundred and forty- nine acres of as good land as can be found in the locality. all of which excepting twelve

acres is under the plow. Mr. Stockman gives his main attention to general farming. but is also largely interested in stock raising and dealing. He keeps on his place some fine specimens of Ayreshire and Shorthom cattle and fine draft horses. Of the latter he has a fine imported stallion and raises a large number of horses for the government. He owns one of the finest improved rural spots in the vicinity of Charlottetown, the place containing an elegant and comfortable home, large and substantial barn, fine pine hedges, well trimmed shade trees and other accessories which indicate the owner to be a man of nice discrimination and excellent judgment. He is progressive in the best sense of the word and takes pride in keeping his place up to the highest standard.

In 1851 Mr. Stockman married Miss Catherine Scott, a daughter of Capt. John Scott, of North River, who for many years commanded a boat, and to this union have been born eleven children, nine of whom are now living. In religion Mr. Stockman is connected with the Presbyterian church and

. lends his support to every worthy movement.

He is a man of keen intelligence and com— mands the absolute confidence and respect of his fellow citizens.

JAMES A.
