paud, Prince Edward Island, a daughter of Anthony Collett, whose family came from Gloucestershire, England, about sixty-three years ago. In politics Mr. Leard gives an ardent support to the Conservative party, while in religion he is a member of the Bap- tist church. He takes an active interest in the benevolent and charitable movements of the community and is considered one of its leading citizens.

A. D. Ross, a successful merchant and highly esteemed citizen of Eldon, Queens county, was born in Lot 57 and received his education in the schools of the locality. He is a son of David and Catherine (McDon- ald) Ross, the former of whom was born in ‘Lot 58, at Pinette, and farmed there during his active years, his death occurring in 1890, at the age of seventy—five years. The sub- ject’s mother was a daughter of the late Alexander and Ann (Martin) Macdonald, the former of whom was born in Lot 60. The paternal grandfather, William Ross, came to Prince Edward Island on the ship “Polly” in 1803 with his father, David Ross, a native of Scotland. He settled on wild land at Pinette, which he cleared and which is still owned by his two sons, Thomas and Andrew. William Ross married Miss Ann Fair. A. D. Ross upon attaining mature years opened a general merchandise business in which he was successfully engaged for many years, and in 1895 came to Eldon. where he opened up a general store, which he has conducted with success and profit to the present time. He carries a large and judi- ciously selected stock-of such commodities as are in demand by the local trade and his business has ever been characterized by ele-

ments of faithfulness and square dealing. In politics he is a Conservative, though .not an aspirant to public office. In religion he is a member of the St. John’s Presbyterian church and is secretary of the board of trus- tees. .

Mr. 'Ross married Miss Charlotte Mac- donald, a daughter of John and Mary (Mackinnon) Macdonald, and a sister of Judge Hector Macdonald, whose sketch appears elsewhere in this volume. To this union have been born one child. Kathleen Alexandria.

WILLIAM MCKINLEY, an enterprising and progressive farmerrin Lot 32, Queeps county, was born at North River, this county, on April 3, 1873, a son of John and Catherine (McKinnon) McKinley, who were married at Charlottetown in 1853, and who became the parents of the following children: Daniel, Sarah, Mary, John, Annie, Robert, William and Bartlett. The mother was a daughter of John and Sarah McKin- non, who came to Prince Edward Island in 1810, and followed farming. John McKin- ley, with the help of his sons, made many fine improvements on the farm, the same comprising a large and commodious- barn, a substantial and comfortable residence, good fences, etc. The paternal grandfather, Don- ald McKinley, was a native of Scotland and came to Prince Edward Island in the early ’2os, while the subject’s maternal ancestors originally came from the Isle of Mull, Argyleshire, Scotland.
