In politics Mr. McKinley is a Liberal, and his religious affiliation is with the Baptist church. John G. Toombs , M. D. , who has been eminently successful in the practice of his profession and who occupies a high stand¬ ing among the leading citizens of Mount Stewart , Queens county, is a native son of Prince Edward Island , having been born at South Rustico , and a son of William Toombs , also a native of this province. The paternal grandfather was a native of Eng¬ land. The subject secured his elementary education in the public schools, supplement¬ ing this by attendance at Dalhousie Univer¬ sity. Having decided to adopt the practice of medicine as his life work, he then matricu¬ lated in the Bellevue Hospital Medical Col¬ lege, New York city, where he graduated in 1884, receiving the degree of Doctor of Medicine. Immediately upon the comple¬ tion of his technical studies, the Doctor en¬ tered upon the practice at New Glasgow . but soon afterwards came to ¬ art, where he has since remained and where he has enjoyed a large and representative patronage. He is well grounded in a knowl¬ edge of the practice of medicine, gives due attention to the ethics of his profession, and has long enjoyed the confidence and esteem of all who know him. He takes an intelli¬ gent interest in local affairs and gives an earnest support to the Liberal party. Fra¬ ternally he is a member of the Independent Order of Foresters and is past high chief ranger for this province, having previously held all the offices in the subordinate lodge. Doctor Toombs married Miss Bessie Coffin , a daughter of Edwin Coffin , a well known ship builder at Mount Stewart , and grand¬ daughter of Kimball Coffin , also well known in the same line of enterprise. Mrs. Toombs ' mother bore the maiden name of Jessie Stew ¬ art. To Doctor and Mrs. Toombs have been born five children, namely: Ruth, Randall, Marion, Darus and Garth. The subject's mother, who bore the maiden name of Isa¬ bella Harker, was a daughter of Scottish parents, who came to Prince Edward Island in about 1819, and located at Cavendish, on property formerly owned by the Rev. John Geddie , the pioneer Presbyterian preacher in this province. John J. McQuaid , who owns and op¬ erates a farm of two hundred and fifty acres in Lot 37, Queens county, was born at Dunstaffrage, Lot 34, Prince Edward Is ¬ land, and is a son of Francis and Eliza (Campion) McQuaid, the former a native of Glasgow, Scotland , and the latter of Water ford, Ireland. The father came to Prince Edward Island with his mother, brothers and sisters, about the time when Father John Macdonald was settling his Tracadie estate. Francis McQuaid acquired a farm at Dunstaffrage, and lived there un¬ til the time of his death, which occurred in 1890, at the age of eighty-eight years.
