6oo PAST AND PRESENT OF charge of the Cumberlanddale school at Dundas , much of the success of which is due to his untiring efforts to raise the stand¬ ard of education and to impress upon those under his charge not only the necessity of a book education, but also the right rules of living and conduct. He is a man not only of good theoretical and practical knowledge but also of correct principles and upright living. In addition he possesses many fine personal qualities of character which have commended him to the esteem and con¬ fidence of the officials, parents and pupils in his community. Edwin McKie , proprietor of the at¬ tractive homesteads at Sailor Hope, Lot 56 , Kings county, was born at Bay Fortune , Prince Edward Island , and is descended from Scottish ancestry, his father having come from that country to Prince Edward Island over one hundred years-ago. He located at Bay Fortune and was there en¬ gaged in farming and shipbuilding, in which he was successful. He died at Bay Fortune in 1S66, at the age of seventy-four years. The subject's mother, who bore the maiden name of Margaret Craig , was a daughter of James Craig , who was a native of Ireland. Dr. William Craig , of Bear River , Kings county, who was for some years successfully engaged in the practice of medicine, was an uncle of the subject. To the subject's par¬ ents were born the following children, be¬ sides himself: Henry, is a farmer at Bay Fortune , Kings county; Mrs. Joseph Ding- well, of Bay Fortune ; Mrs. Benjamin Allen , of ; Mrs. John Francis , of Fortune Bridge ; Edgar, who is connected with the shops of the. Intercolonial Railway at , New Brunswick . Edwin McKie 's education was received in the common schools of that early day, which were somewhat primitive in their equipment and methods, nevertheless he has \ always been a close reader and keen observer of men and events and is considered a man of wide general information. He received his physical training on the parental farm, in the work of which he early became a la¬ bourer, and to which line of effort he has devoted his energies during practically all the active years of his life. His farm is well developed ■ and highly improved and is considered one of the most attractive and productive farms of the lo¬ cality. Mr. McKie married Miss Melvina Mor ¬ row, a member of the Morrow family of North Lake , and to them have been born the following children: Alfred, deceased: John Henry , of Boston, Massachussets; Wil ¬ liam, also residing at Boston; Joseph. Charles, Walter, Mary and Maude. In matters political Mr. McKie renders support to the Conservative party, though he is not a seeker after the honours or emoluments of public office. In religion he is a mem¬ ber of the Dundas Presbyterian church. He is a man of strong personality and has at all times thrown his influence to the side of such movements as have promised the great¬ est benefit to the community. He is widely known and is highly respected by all. Michael D. McCormack , a successful farmer and capable justice of the peace at Launching, Lot 55, Kings county, was born on the farm adjoining the one on which he now resides, in 1839, and has re¬ sided in this community all his life.
